Christ, I just read a very thorough synopsis of 'The Collector' and it sounds horrible. Nothing but a gross-out movie. Reminds me of when I was about 8 and we'd sit around the lunch table at school trying to come up with the grossest, most elaborate and painful ways to torture a person or die. It truly sound like this movie took every single idea like that, threw them in a blender, drank it, then simultaneously puked and sh-t out the mixture and filmed it. I prefer to think of it as "home alone 4" like if McCauley Culkin's character got a taste for blood and continued to set up traps for burglars in people's homes. Seriously watch it right after home alone 1,2 and 3... it will fit perfectly, largely because the traps get progressively more violent through that series. And as strange and bizarre as Culkin has become in his adult life... this just might be a plausible explanation for that abomination of a film. Sometimes I wonder where they find the people to put the $ behind sh-t like that... Personally, I prefer movies like the first Saw... where you see just enough and then they cut away from the blood and violence- what you don't see/your imagination is far worse than when you actually see it play out on film.

"The Fourth Kind", another crappy movie, very boring and I just didn't care at all, another 0/10.

Meh I watch a lot of French horror, I am now almost completely Unshockabl. "The collector" was just so incredibly tame compared to Martyrs, Trouble Every Day, and Inside. The big difference is, those are incredibly good films, and although it's a labor to get through them the payoff is a surprisingly profound gutturally aggressive repulsive psychologically damaging piece of art. I hear the Serbians are swooping in to take the mantle though.

The problem with "The Fourth Kind" is that they want you to buy into the idea that the "actual footage" is all real. They're clearly fake, all conveniently taped during every incident... we're supposed to believe they're going to allow footage of a guy murdering his family and killing himself on camera is going to be allowed to be shown on a movie? We're supposed to believe that UFO is real, when it clearly doesn't fit with the rest of the image being shot. We're supposed to believe those are real bug eyes on the "real" psychologist?! The town shown isn't even Nome for god sakes! Sometimes a film 'based on true events' is a good thing- where they tweak minor things here and there to create a better story on film... such as things like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which when you read the story of what 'really' happened, the film version is much more exciting. Exorcism of Emily Rose suffered from the opposite effect- the 'real' story is better on paper and the movie could have benefited from more items being included in the film (whether it really happened or not, the detailed accounts that they based the movie on should have been more widely used in the film). This movie, however, draws on real accounts which aren't even real! I like to read into further details about 'true stories' in order to form a better opinion on the story itself in the movie... This movie failed miserably on all accounts. Piss poor acting, horrible 'real' recordings, and a bad taste in your mouth when the whole thing is done with. I will say it was better than "The Collector", but I'd only give it a 1/10... and that's only cause I won't put it on the same level as the former. **Edit- Please forgive me for my horrible grammar It's 2:45 in the morning and my brain is fried from two lackluster movies!! Here's hoping Defendor and Slammin' Salmon are better... I won't hold my breath though **

Martyrs is in my top 10 horror films of all time, just when you think it's done with you, it comes back to throw you in the grinder. With hints of everything from "the ring", to "Hellrazor", and even "straw dogs", it easily transcends the brutality with a really unique and interesting set of questions presented to the audience. Also, if you're looking for a different yet interesting zombie film see "Pontypool", another one of my favorites from last year.

Did you ever see "Them"? Also supposedly based on a true story, French... not a great movie, but definitely not one to watch when you've just moved to a house way out in the country and are home alone... As for your movie selections... added and added to the queue "Pontypool" isn't out yet, but "Martyrs" is. I had it on my queue at one point, but removed it, as I wasn't sure whether it was worth a viewing. Funny thing is... I'm the one who wants to watch it... the brother isn't so keen on the idea of mass violence. Just have to wait until I'm in the mood for subtitles Unless it's like "Let the Right One In" where you can be lazy and turn on the dubbed version Often that doesn't give you the same feel though. "Mongol" just wouldn't have been the same in English.

Yes I did see "Ils (Them)" it was a really good film, did you know that "the strangers" was a remake, but it was so bad that the connection was legally removed from the advertising. There's nothing I hate more than American remakes, other than maybe "the ring", Hollywood has almost always gotten it wrong (should read extracted intellect and soul). Hollywood should stick to what it does best , blockbusters...leave the thought-provoking art to independent filmmakers and foreign movie companies.

Yeah, I saw "Them" after having moved to a new house, etc... within the first two days. Was not a wise choice on my part- and I was home alone that night. Yes, "The Strangers" was awful. When it came out, I told people to just watch "Them" instead. I swear Liv Tyler has a clause in her contract that says she must cry and whine in every movie that she's in... I waited for it, and waited for it... and then, yep, there it was- her crying in a corner, whining.
I agree- "The Grudge", "The Eye", etc, etc- all are horrible remakes of of something that should have been left alone. One of my employees loved "The Eye" SO much when it came out- was recommending it to anyone that would listen. We all barred him from reviewing movies ever again. The Ring, however- that girl climbing out of the TV creeps me out still... I would have been hightailing it outta that apartment if that'd been me!! *Shudder*

The wife and I were invited to the advance producer screening in Hollywood (director, and producers were all there, it was pretty cool) and the whole thing made me homesick, after I was finished being terrified (middle of the night screening, only about 20 people).

The big difference is, those are incredibly good films, and although it's a labor to get through them the payoff is a surprisingly profound gutturally aggressive repulsive psychologically damaging piece of art. I hear the Serbians are swooping in to take the mantle though. What do you think about "A Serbian Film"? I mean.......baby rape? Really? I didn't used to think anything would bother me, but that is.....wow....that's some seriously fu-ked up sh-t right there. Yeah, that one bothers me, ever since you first broke the news... it's actually bothered me a lot. Most of the aforementioned French films are deeply rooted in fantasy, but I think there's a point where things get, maybe, a little bit too real. I assure you at some point in history everything in the Serbian film, that is going to be presented for entertainment value, has actually happened, and that kind of bothers me. When I was young I used to seek out films like this, as well as crime scene photos, and real death videos, just to see how much I could take, to kind of numb myself. Then as I got older and realized I live in a culture that's not war-torn. And I'm not forced to face inhumanity on a regular basis, so why the hell am I forcing myself to. I eventually came to the conclusion that this kind of stuff cheapens life, and maybe it's not such a good idea to race away from one's humanity... it's not a weakness. (a conclusion I suspect will hit Brandon any day now ) And I don't know if you read in the St. Paddy's thread, but not too long ago I nearly lost a child, so this kind of stuff tends to awaken the sleeping monster, and makes me agitated at those who would even seek to make this entertaining. I hearken to a very hard and fast rule that I think all society should heed... YOU DON'T HARM THE INNOCENT!!! to deaden society to the the plights of our weakest members, is to weaken the structure at its very core It might be profound art, but in my mind the jury is definitely still out on this one.

"Southland Tales"
I can't really say its crap, and I can't say its great. It has some very well done stuff, mainly the shooting was good, the music was interesting, the acting was good. I don't feel anything else really, its like there is a void that this movie leaves, where nothing belongs there. I just can't hate it, doesn't make much sense, but then again it doesn't beg you to pay attention. Its one of those things where you sit there at the end and go, "Huh" walk off and continue with life in general.I give it a, */10 because parts were done very well, but it was unique.

I can't really dig either "Them" or "The Strangers". Mainly because they're not really scary, the main characters in both are wildly stupid and because if I were ever in that situation and was in the middle of nowhere, I would be all, "Hey, there's some creepy fu-kers in the yard. Could you hand me that shotgun? Thanks, this will be over in a flash, don't get the ice cream out yet." And you can totally tell that movie was French. Only the French would bend over like that. BWAHAHAHAHA!! Oh, damn that's both funny as fuck and true as hell.

Defendor...Great Movie, very funny, but got serious towards the end. 8 out of 10. Haven't seen that one yet, but from the trailer it looks a lot like "Special" even the fact that Michael Rappaport and Woody Harrelson are similar looking guys. Weird.

By the way...
The actor who plays Kick-Ass is a 19 year old who's engaged to a 43 year old, and they are expecting a child. Kind of awesome.

Yes, this movie was excellent! Although, I disagree that every single change that they made was perfect. I would have preferred that they did not change SPOILERS----------------the fact that Hitgirl killed the main baddie. He killed her father, she deserved her revenge! And Kick-Ass isn't a killer. That's what set him apart from BD and HG. What makes him a real hero.----------------SPOILERS END.
Also, I was hoping it would be more violent. With more direct shots from the book. My favorite panel didn't make it in. I was really hoping it would! The panel where Hitgirl slices that dude's head in half, diagonally. That would have been sweet.
My favorite part was when she puts the strobelight down for the "Robin" maneuver.
9/10

kick ass 9/10
Never before and probably never again has a 12-year-old kicked so much ass. I really like that the movie was well-crafted and never swayed too far into comedy or drama, keeping a perfect tight rope like balance of the two. I think this is actually the first and only of this type of film ( comedy action hero) where I actually cared about the characters, and what happened to them in the end.
Soundtrack choices where also pretty cool, one question though, what's with every film these days using John Murphy - In the House In a Heartbeat ?
Worth seeing, probably worth a sequel, definitely worth owning on Blu-Ray.
The Time traveler's wife: a void where a number has been swallowed into abstraction /10
I think my wife put it best whilst eating handmade spicy Shanghai style noodles... "this movies retarded", yup that about sums it up, I've placed a bicycle helmet on the DVD copy so as it doesn't hurt itself, or anyone else, while waiting to go back to Blockbuster.
