My brother in law just came up positive. He found out the same day as his daughter's sweet 16 birthday party, so she couldn't go. They shouldn't have had the damn thing in the first place, so not very sympathetic, even though my niece is one of the nicest kids you would ever meet.
The worst part is he was around my 76 year old mother in law for two days before he got tested and my mother in law spent most of the day with my wife, a couple hours of which riding in the car together. My wife has a host of medical issues, so this is not good for either of them.
To top it off, we had plans set up to go to Maine along with renting a house to visit my pregnant daughter. We need to be quarantined for 14 days and of course the flight leaves in 13 days. About to see if the rental place will allow us to reschedule because of course there are no refunds if you cancel within 15 days and we found out 13 days before.
Thanks, Orange Nightmare.

Fuck. That's all scary. Hoping for mild or no infection at all. People just don't get that it's not about them. I don't mean to make light of your situation, but I saw this the other day.

How's everyone doing? Has your aunt made it past the dangers, OK? She seems to have made it through. It still sounds like she might have had Covid, but I chatted with her for a little while last week and she says she feels fine and the symptoms didn't last more than a few days. Unrelated tangent that will eventually lead back to this topic, I promise: A couple weeks ago when the news broke that President Fuckface insulted American veterans as "losers" and "suckers", I was so pissed off that I went on Twitter and posted short little tributes to both of my grandfathers who served in WW2. A few years ago my dad wrote a book about our family history (dating back to the 17th century, he got hardcore with it) and he included these fantastic photos of both his dad and my mom's dad in their uniforms along with some detailed info about their service records. I took photos of the photos in the book, and tweeted out the photos along with a brief bio of what they did in the war. They're both gone now, and I felt like I had to defend their honor. I told my dad about it, and thanked him for being so thorough with his book. He asked me to email him screenshots of the tweets, which I did. Then he forwarded my email to EVERY SINGLE LIVING RELATIVE on both sides of the family. Even since my inbox has been full of thank-you responses from aunts and uncles and cousins, even some of my dad's cousins I don't even know. Except for my aunt, she called me up. We talked about what an amazing person her dad/my grandpa was, and she thanked me for sticking up for him and for including the photo of him in his uniform (dude looks like Captain America, I swear to god). Then I asked her how she was feeling, whether she had found out any more info on her potential Covid diagnosis. She never get any more info from the doctor, but her symptoms didn't last more than a few days. So maybe it was just a bad cold and not Covid, or if it was Covid maybe it wasn't a very severe case. Either way, unless she was downplaying things, she seemed fine. And fuck the fake president for insulting my dead grandfathers. I only really knew one of them (my mom's dad died when I was a baby), but the grandpa I grew up with was the finest man I've ever known.

Seems we dodged a bullet. Today is 15 days and only my brother in law ended up positive. Big sigh of relief. Of course, my mother in law got tested after 5 days because she couldn't stand being cooped up for 2 weeks. Came back negative and she went about doing whatever she wanted, including hanging out with her long-time best friend who has lupus along with other friends in their 70s. Horribly dangerous and so glad nothing came of it. Nothing my wife and I could say could stop her. Just another reason this is spreading so much, people no bothering to listen to the experts even if they have been wearing the mask.

That’s great news!
On another Covid-related note, I think my brother and I convinced our parents and our dad’s siblings to avoid a potential catastrophe. My aunt (the one who had the Covid scare barely a month ago) is retiring, and she was planning a party/reunion to celebrate. The idea was for everyone (my aunt, plus her 3 siblings and their spouses) to spend a weekend later this fall at a resort type place in Kentucky. My aunt and one uncle live in Ohio (in a town that isn’t taking this pandemic seriously at all), another aunt and uncle live in Tennessee, and my parents live in Indiana. As soon as we heard the plan, both my brother (a doctor) and I (not a doctor) expressed to our parents how insanely stupid it is for a group of 7 people all over the age of 65 from 3 different states to all travel to a fourth state for an extended period of time in the middle of a goddamn pandemic.
Our mom has been taking this thing extremely seriously since the very beginning was never on board with the trip idea, and she was the one to convince her sister-in-law to postpone the trip until it was safer. Phew.

We're implementing a new policy - no mask = fuck the fuck off. If you're sick get someone else to shop for you. Good. Maybe after a year of anti-science fucktards dicking around for attention we'll finally have a government interested in not killing us for votes and they'll enact some shit to force people to live more carefully.
I'm kind of looking forward to the dopes that try to grandstand and whine about their hurt feelings and freedumb.

I don't think it's possible to reach any other conclusion that 21st century humans, and Americans in particular, are too stupid and insulated in customized information-bubbles to navigate a global pandemic in a way that isn't catastrophic and terrifying.

I got lectured by a home-schooling, internet-educated super-breeder, while her German husband vuz angrily pacing beside us mumbling about rights and freedom and how I would see who is truly right when the civil war finally comes.
America's going to be a horrible place for about the next 20 years.

It's mighty galvanizing seeing people getting vaccinated today. Sure, we turned down millions of early doses because we're stupid from our bones right to the very top of our country. But it will eventually get to us all despite the best efforts of the worst people who put themselves above a nation and the planet.

Is everyone still alive and avoiding Covid? My nephew got and I found out 20 minutes before we were leaving to get our Christmas tree and I had been with him two days before. When we were finally free to go out all but the Charlie Brown trees and oddly, spray painted trees (who the hell buys a real tree spray painted purple, blue or bright green?!?!). We're going to have to go fake tree, which I'm not a fan of. Thanks Trump! I should buy a blood red one in honor of Melania.

Had the same tree since 2008. Still looks really good. Changed out the lights since then, but the tree is in great shape.
Like many others, I'm worried that now that we have vaccines out there people will just stop doing everything to avoid transmission. People think it's just about over because they want it to be. These next months are going to be scary if that happens.
It's really heartwarming to see all of these anti-mask covid naysayers in government be the first to push to the front of the line to get vaccinated. We know Lady G would definitely have dressed up as a woman and picked up a drowned infant to get on a lifeboat had he been on Titanic.
The UK has pretty much shut down entirely since the end of last week. Major spike with a new mutation. Lovely.

No surprises. People are predictable, and with the holidays and the promise of a vaccine, they gave up. We're going to have a deadly few months. I don't see the sense of group responsibility that we had for a while coming back the same way. There's a sushi bar/buffet up the road that had every parking spot filled last night. I haven't really gone anywhere except work for months, and Target today, but the roads are packed and people ain't just going to work.

Welp, I scheduled a COVID test for tomorrow afternoon. A woman I work with just tested positive, and I was sitting closest to her at our staff meeting last Thursday. I've also been working fairly closely with her up to the end of last week. I feel fine with no symptoms at all, but I don't want to risk it. Fingers crossed.

Great! I've been tested twice. First nurse was gentle, second one practically jammed the q-tip into my brain and did both nostrils. How did yours go?

The test was totally fine. I'd heard the stories of having the q-tip jammed up so far that it scratches the back of your eyeballs, but the nurse who did mine was real gentle. She did both nostrils and held the q-tip in place for 15 seconds in each one, and I couldn't really tell but it felt like it was only about an inch or so up there. Enough to feel like I had to sneeze but not so far that it felt like she was scraping my brain. It was an almost pleasant sensation actually. She also complimented me on my nasal passages, which I can honestly say was the first time I'd had anyone compliment that particular part of my body.
So yeah, the test was no big deal at all. Even though I was expecting a negative result it's still a relief to know for sure. Turns out wearing a mask works! So wear a goddamn mask!

I had two more negative tests over the weekend. Without going into specifics (I don't want to betray a confidence, even on here) I urgently did two tests on Saturday. One rapid antigen test and one PCR test, both came back negative. I had a low grade fever (99.5) on Friday morning and called in sick to work, and even though the fever was gone by that afternoon I still scheduled two different tests. Even though I felt fine I was way more nervous waiting for the results than the last time.
I can't fucking wait to get vaccinated. And every person I see out in public wearing their mask below their nose or all the way down on their chin, I want to punch those people in their stupid fucking selfish faces.

The plan now has evolved to THIS administration saying they'll have enough vaccinations for the entire country by summer. Just a few days ago, shit, this morning even, we were discussing there being no major changes before next winter.
When you get people together who actually have a general history of getting shit done, well, you see shit get done. Just imagine how many would be alive and where we could be right now with responsible, intelligent, conscientious, educated, knowledgeable adults handling things. It's infuriating. But I guess it's enough right now to just see a way out.

So the shitfuck u-boat commander and his asshole wife came in today with Corona 12-pack boxes on their heads. They're the couple where she lectured me months back on covid while he stomped around like a toddler whining about the coming civil war. Just because I asked them to be fucking adult humans and wear masks.
They obviously couldn't see well and and looked like not only like total idiots fumbling around trying to make a very stale fucking point, but that they also developed a lockdown drinking problem. So I just sniffed and went back to the office to finish paperwork and to wait until they were gone because I am not 100% able to trust myself anymore to not say anything. I am getting downright ornery with cunts like them.
