Playing AOL radio, listening to jazzy Christmas stuff until something worth watching comes on TV later. Harry Allen "Wish You a Merry Christmas" right now. Frank Sinatra now. Nice.

Christmas is drawing near.
Listening to the whole thing, but specifically, I'm on Wizards in Winter (36:32) right now. Probably my favorite song by them. ;D

I liked the guys from TSO when they were Savatage. There's something about the stuff they do as TSO that irks me. I'm sure it ties into the pompous "majestic metal" thing I've developed such an aversion to. Don't think they suck at all, I just don't bother with it.
Anyone who missed out on, or was born since, Mind Funk's (who wanted to be Mind Fuck and had to cave to pussy-ass Sony to get released) debut album from 1991, should rectify that lapse posthaste. They were comprised of mostly thrash guys in a side project before side projects were cooler than actually being in a band. Most of you don't know those days.
Obvious ballad for the times, but still great.
Just get the album, it'll be easier. ;D

A Savatage day doesn't sound like a bad day at all, to be honest. Anyway, just got done listening to this:

Nifty. I picked up one of theirs in 2007 or so. Fun stuff, like a viking spring break soundtrack. ;D

My favorite Mind Funk tune. John Monte is an underrated bassist who was in M.O.D prior to being in this band. I really liked these guys bsck in the day.

I respect Tool, but I am not a fan. Listening to them is like constantly trying to dig your way out of wet concrete when you're 4-feet deep. No fun.
Wifespar liked the Trail of the Dead song.

Tool is just about the only modern metal I can listen to. I've been on a major trip-hop kick lately. Something about having snow on the ground makes me crave cold, sterile-yet-soulful music. I swear, when it's late at night in the dead of winter and you're driving slowly through snowfall, there is nothing better than Portishead on the car stereo.

I've been slightly obsessed with the song "Madness" by Muse for the past few days. It's worrisome. I still feel the same way about Muse that I always have (that they're Radiohead for people who don't like Radiohead), but now I'm curious. Have I been wrong about this band all this time? Are they actually as awesome as this song implies? Because HOLY FUCKING FUCK this song is FUCKING GREAT. That wobbly. stuttery bass beat? The weird choir bit at 1:58? The robotic guitar solo? THAT SHIT WORKS!
It's entirely possible that I'm not wrong, that Muse is exactly the band I've always thought they are, except now I kinda want to listen to the rest of this album and find out. At the very least I'll have to file this song into my "Everybody Gets One Freebie" folder for otherwise-annoying and/or shitty bands or singers that somehow manage to produce one undeniably great song, right alongside Kings of Leon's "Radioactive" and Snow Patrol's "Shut Your Eyes".

New Voivod. So glad. "Target Earth" The last album, based around Piggy's posthumously included archived guitar parts from his laptop, was an unfortunate letdown. I also did not like Jason Newsted in this band. He never should have left Flotsam. Of course, I love Flotsam, so maybe it's better he did... A musing for another time then. And now Blacky rejoined to fill that bass spot. Glory! Voivod has a new guitar player, Chewy, who was originally inspired by Piggy to play, and brings some of the same unique approach to riffs and songwriting, but does manage to move the band sound forward in his own way. There's kind of an updated Killing Technology/Dimension Hatross vibe infused in this album. A little Angel Rat and Nothingface as well. All of which is fine.

Wow, there are some interesting ass thoughts in this thread that I feel demand my attention, but now's not not the time. This is my offering, an unreleased song from from one of my favorite dead bands:
And if you aren't feeling that, the ultimate broke & depressed tune:
