Don't care. I got my tickets for Thursday night and critics can eat a bag of penises.
I'm not expecting another radical risk-taking movie like The Last Jedi, but if they can end this trilogy with a similar vibe to The Force Awakens then I'll be happy. And if it sucks, I'll get over it. I've made my peace with Attack of the Clones over the years.

Good or bad I couldn't really care less. I already gave up on Star Wars movies.

With Rosario Dawson cast as Ahsoka Tano, I'm even more annoyed that Cory Booker's presidential campaign didn't get farther. It would have been cool to have a fan favorite character played by the "First Girlfriend" or whatever.

I've started rediscovering my love of Star Wars novels. I'm not gonna go crazy and read everything that ties into the new canon, but I started reading the first book in the Timothy Zahn "Thrawn" trilogy and it's a lot of fun. Not the most action packed novel ever, more military politics than anything else, but as a longtime fan of Thrawn in the old EU it definitely scratches an itch. And the guy's even started another Thrawn/Chiss trilogy that I'll have to read once I get caught up.
A lot (most) of the 90s/2000s Star Wars novels were pretty bad, but Zahn's books were always great.

I listened to the Thrawn trilogy way back when I had a long commute. Rene Auberjonois did the narration and he was incredible, especially C3P0.

I was so excited when they made a Thrawn figure back then, those books were good.

I remember re-reading that trilogy right in the middle of when the prequels were coming out and being impressed by how well they still fit even though nobody really knew there would be prequels when they were written. Part of the plot deals with the Empire making clones so naturally there's some mention of the Clone Wars, but it's just vague as it is in the original trilogy so it still fits for the most part with the prequels that tell that story. Timothy Zahn is really good at playing around in that universe without breaking too many rules, even more so now that decades have passed and the SW universe is way more fleshed out than it was in 1991. His new Thrawn books (I'm still on the first one) are jam packed with nods to really obscure areas of SW lore and it's a ton of fun.
And the reviews I've read of the first book in his new trilogy make it sound like it's focused purely on the Chiss, Thrawn's creepy race that hangs out at the very edge of the galaxy just keeping to themselves and watching stuff unfold. Zahn carved out a little corner where he can make up his own lore, and it sounds awesome.
I don't think Zahn even had the name Chiss yet when he wrote his first three Thrawn novels way back in the early 90s. I'm pretty sure that name didn't come up until the Hand of Thrawn sequel duology several years later. But they're such a cool idea, an advanced race just chilling out at the edge of the galaxy, keeping to themselves and keeping an eye on events unfolding in the galaxy itself and also threats coming from outside. Some ideas from the old EU were just too interesting to not bring into the new canon, Zahn's stuff especially. Still waiting on them to bring back Mara Jade somehow though.

I'm going to say this here and be done with the subject. My cousin's son-in-law is a Disney exec and said that after the shit with Roseanne and James Gunn, that everyone in the entertainment division now has a social media clause in their contract. Gina Carano should have read that shit. She probably did. I guarantee that with the shit she's been posting over the last several months that Lucasfilm reps have spoken to her, probably more than once, and I assume warned her. She obviously decided it was more important to her to post ignorant and bigoted shit on social media than to continue working for Lucasfilm/Disney, and that's her right to throw away her job like that. Seriously, this woman has gotten way too much attention for being a cunt lately. Now, hopefully, after some time and all the other cunts have gotten "it's not fair" and "buh cancel culture free speech num nuh" out of their systems about her, they'll refocus on the impeachment trial or their sisters or something, and she'll go the fuck away.

I've always taken the position that Cara Dune was a cool character with interesting story possibilities, but played by a wooden actress who can do the physical stuff really well but is horrible at everything else. Then her social media posts started getting worse and worse and I figured it was time to Lucasfilm to pull a Poochie and just say that Cara Dune died on the way back to her home planet (which I think is Alderaan, but whatever).
Also, Gina Carano blocked me on Twitter because I pointed out to her that Trump did not in fact win the election.

Even better than the poochie thing would be to just never acknowledge her ever again. Don't even give that cunt the courtesy of mentioning her character again.

This was really the hill she chose to die on?
I bet disney warned her about this before it reached this point too.

I just don't get it. This was really the hill she chose to die on? I bet disney warned her about this before it reached this point too. They absolutely did. I read that there was a Cara Dune spinoff planned to be announced along with the other new Star Wars projects at the Investor Day event, but it was canned (or at least put on hold) due to her problematic social media posts about the election. Someone from Lucasfilm/Disney definitely warned her then. Republicans, especially the dumb ones, seem to get off on playing victim or martyr, and this whole thing just feeds into that. It's good for Disney in the short term and definitely the long term. Issue is, it's only good for her in the short term. Praise and righteous indignation from mega-assholes like Sean Hannity, Jack Posobiec, and Dana Loesch will only go so far for her. If she's smart, she'll figure out a way to live off of her $8 million for the rest of her life. But she's not smart and will need to work again. Disney has cut her off, and it's pretty safe to say that Sony, WB, and Netflix will avoid her, too. Paramount is a bit of a wild card, but she'll most likely wind up making movies with Kevin Sorbo at The Asylum, or if she's very lucky, Mel Gibson at Icon. Or she'll have to come out of retirement and fight again. I'm sure Dana White would love that, but after the beating Cris Cyborg gave her in 2009, she probably wouldn't be too keen on it.

It's insanely stupid of her, and it strengthens my theory that there's some compulsion involved when people like Carano can't bottle up their Twitter bullshit (or switch to an alternate anonymous account) even when it could mean losing an extremely lucrative career in one of the most rock-solid entertainment franchises in the world. I'm sure she was spoken to after her posts about the election, about Covid, about trans people, but dammit, she just felt so strongly about that meme comparing conservatives in 2021 to Jews during the Holocaust that she had to take a stand and hit the retweet button. And now she's fired from a job that would have made her extremely rich, and in about a month the right-wing outrage machine will move on to the next "victim of consequences of their actions cancel culture" and leave her in the dust because around May of this year video will surface of one of the Stranger Things kids using the N-word and they'll do it all over again.
But I did like Cara Dune as a character, even though Carano is a shit actress. A survivor of Alderaan turning into a badass Imperial-hating commando is a perfect character for a show like The Mandalorian. But if Marvel can recast Rhodey with a better actor after Terence Howard acted like a dick, then they can find a better person to play Cara Dune, or her sister Tara Sandhill.

And now she's making a movie with Ben Shapiro to be exclusive to Daily Wire subscribers Seriously, tho, I have a hard time believing he just up and called her yesterday or whatever, and I think this has been in the works for a bit. Like the MAGAt piece of shit that she is, being warned about her offensive and incendiary social media posts by Lucasfilm/Disney pissed her off, and she decided to push until she got fired. Then she could not only play martyr but also help Shapiro finally make a movie (he's a failed [read: rejected] screenwriter from a Hollywood family). BTW, okc, I guarantee it's going to Gaten Matarazzo. That kid already sucks. I'm also going to mention that I think Cara Dune's character was much better when she was Colonel Kira Nerys on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Also, the actress, Nana Visitor, is also the exact opposite of a stupid, bigot, Trumpist cunt.

Nana Visitor is a badass. Just got a Roku and successfully split the signal to both TVs, so we'll probably get Disney now. I'll have to keep Kira in mind now when I watch Mandolorian just to keep a handle on my disgust when that bag of shit is on the screen.

I was reminded yesterday during my millionth time watching Silverado that Brian Dennehy is one of the absolute best actors at making his whole face part of a character. He acts with every muscle in his whole face, he's just a natural. It struck me just how difficult it is for some while I was watching Carano in Mando struggle at just standing there being quiet. She's fucking terrible. She is always smirking no matter the level of drama or intensity of a scene. And when she's not talking it's all duck lips and opening her eyes really wide (which isn't big) as her only reaction. I don't give a shit about the other crap she got fired for, I think she's more foundationally ignorant than intentional with her chest-thumping dumbfuckery. She's just a very bad actor who will never be good. Every production company can legitimately never employ her again simply by saying she can't act, and have nothing to do with her politics or whatever she wants to call those. Not every athlete can transition like John Matuszak.

This is the best bit of face acting I've ever seen: It's not really fair to other actors (especially UFC fighters who pretend to act) to cite De Niro as the best at something, but in that scene, in the span of about 10 seconds, he conveys an entire inner monologue without saying a word. Morrie fucked up, so Morrie is a dead man. This bit always just floors me: That flash of absolute fucking menace in his eyes, and not only menace but also a tinge of glee. It's mind-blowing. But this is about Gina Carano. Gina Carano is fucking terrible. The first thing I saw her in was Haywire (which fucking rules), and even though it was clear in that movie she got the job because of her physical abilities, she gave a decent performance. Maybe her performance was salvaged in the edit or maybe Soderbergh is just that good of a director, but she was pretty good in that movie. Then I saw her in 6 Fast 6 Furious, and she sucked. Then she was in Deadpool, and she sucked in that too. She also sucked in The Mandalorian, but if Star Wars has taught me anything it's how to ignore lousy acting and focus on the character. But she really is distractingly bad at times on that show. Pedro Pascal can act even when we can't see his face (even when it's not even him in the armor). Ming-Na Wen and Rosario Dawson and Katee Sackhoff can act. Gina Carano just plain can't act. She regularly gets upstaged by the Baby Yoda puppet.

But other than that dummy who ain't coming back, Mandalorian is such an enjoyable watch. Plays out like a video game, but so what. Once things got established, each episode is damn near its own movie. They are each packed with chained events and large-scale battles and effects. Already close to done, 4 or 5 episodes left.

That was a nifty close to the chapter. I wondered why Rosario Dawson took such a small role, cool as it was. But someone at work told me she's getting her own series, so now it makes sense.
Wifespar mentioned she'd like to watch all the movies in order now, so there's that.
