Wilford Brimley died Saturday at the age 85. Pretty long life. Younger than a lot of people thought he was. He was fucking amazing in John Carpenter's The Thing and was easily the best curmudgeon in Hollywood for over a decade. Millennials can mock the way he said diabetes all they want, but I guarantee more people were aware of how much that disease sucks than would have otherwise been without his commercials and those youtube videos. In late February, he pulled out of a bunch of conventions for the rest of the year. I thought it was out of caution about Covid, and probably was, but NBC said he had been on dialysis and struggling with several other medical conditions for a while. I wish I'd gotten a chance to meet him.

There’s a great Twitter account called The Brimley Line that marks when famous people reach the age Wilford Brimley was when “Cocoon” was released. They mark it as 18,530 days old (about 50 years). The last few people who crossed the Brimley Line were Matthew McConaughey, Wyclef Jean, Ben Harper, and P Diddy. So either famous people are taking better care of themselves these days or Mr. Brimley just looked especially old for his age.
Either way, I always liked him. He was great in The Thing, he tolerated being in that goofy Ewok movie, and he could sell the shit out of a box of oats.

He was also great in The Natural. I can't see anyone else but him playing Pops.

He was always a solidifying and commanding presence in everything he did. One person said this about him: Wilford Brimley was always Wilford Brimley years old. That makes perfect sense only for him. My sister texted me one day after she turned 50 and said, "Holy shit! I'm the same age as Wilford Brimley was when he did Cocoon!" This was also good, since the man himself responded.

I didn't even know Chadwick Boseman was sick. I guess very few did. I've said this before, and I'll say it again: FUCK CANCER!

In a bit of bizarre irony, Jackie Robinson day, which is usually celebrated by Major League Baseball on April 15th, was postponed due to Covid and the delay of the baseball season, and was finally held today.

I didn't expect Chadwick Boseman's death to affect me as strongly as it has. Not only the shock of it, but losing such an important icon for Black people at this specific moment in history. The timing is almost unspeakably cruel.
But the strength of that man to take on such a physically-demanding role while battling stage 3/4 colon cancer is superhuman. I can't even fathom it. But he knew what T'Challa and that movie would mean to people, especially right now, so he fought on. Black Panther already had earned more cultural significance than anything else in the endless stream of superhero movies, but knowing that Chadwick Boseman played that part while privately fighting for his life makes it immortal.

Damn near every kid who picked up a guitar since the late 70s was influenced by EVH to do so in some way. Everyone wanted to play like him, no one really can or will. His approach was singular and changed the way rock guitar was viewed and played forever. His mark is permanent. Cancer. Fuck.

I’m not a huge Van Halen fan, but Eddie’s skills are undeniable. And the first VH album is an all time classic. “Runnin With The Devil” is one of the greatest opening tracks ever. God damn that album is good.

I'm a little torn on how I feel about Sean Connery. I loved almost every acting role he had, and I'm certainly not at all happy he's gone, but as a person, he seemed kind of shitty. His ex-wife says he beat her, and considering things he had said publicly about hitting women, I believe her.

Rush Limbaugh croaked. Maybe the last few weeks have softened me in the way I react to someone's death, but Limbaugh was a poisonous cancer on this country. I'm glad he's gone.
See new thread.

Yaphet Kotto died yesterday, amazing character actor and genre movie actor extraordinaire. He was Dr. Kananga aka Mr. Big, he was Dennis "We need to talk about the bonus situation" Parker, and he was almost Lando Calrissian.
And when I was thinking about how he's the 4th actor from Alien to pass away in the last few years, it struck me that the actors are dying in the same order as their characters in the movie. First John Hurt dies in January 2017, then Harry Dean Stanton in September 2017, then Ian Holm in June 2020, and now Yaphet Kotto. Tom Skerritt is still alive and kicking at 87, and if we're going by the Director's Cut of Alien then Dallas doesn't actually die until very late in the movie, so the morbid timeline is still intact.
Anyway, rest in peace Mr. Kotto. He's awesome and I think I'll watch Alien again tonight.

I was a big fan of Yaphet Kotto. Parker was my favorite character in my favorite movie, but I loved seeing him in anything. Damn, he had presence. Sad day.
That's kinda creepy about the order of deaths in Alien and in real life. I didn't realize that.

Parker is my second favorite in that movie (Ripley is forever the coolest, because come on). I've always liked how that crack he makes at Lambert ("I can think of something else I'd rather be eating...") could easily come across as a sexist joke at her expense, but her reaction hints at some romantic/sexual history between the two. Plus, when they get cornered by the Alien, he dies protecting her. They were definitely a couple.
Oh, and according to another article I just read, apparently Yaphet Kotto also turned down the role of Jean-Luc Picard. Jeez.

His voice always grabs my attention when it comes on. Such a solid and strong entertainer. Man, having him in the Star Trek universe would've been cool. Being so far removed from ST:TNG in its original airing, and having watched that series so many times since, it's easy to say Kotto would have been wrong for the part, but it also would have turned out to be a totally different show. So who knows. It's easy to know for sure that the Indy movies would have eaten large amounts of charred assholes with Tom Selleck in the hat. But a Star Trek with Captain Kotto could have been fucking balls-out awesome. His swagger would make Shatner jealous.

As much as I think Kotto as Picard could have been cool, that would probably have meant no Avery Brooks as Captain Sisko later, so... I'm happy with my posh and kinda stuffy English-French Captain, blue collar space trucker, and kinda blue collar yet sophisticated New Orleanian station commander and mini-warship captain the way they are in the annals of history.

It’s still weird to me that Purple Rain is both not a very good movie and also one of the best albums ever recorded. It’s a masterpiece, James. Complete, comprehensive.
RIP Prince’s movie dad.

For the last day, I've been trying to figure out which my favorite over the top and pretty ridiculous Clarence Williams III role is: the funeral home director/Satan from Tales from the Hood or Samson Simpson from Half Baked. I have not come to a conclusion.
