Ric was unique, great talent. And let's not forget Eddie Money last Friday. He had some great songs, the kind of stuff people hear in their head as the soundtrack to their memories.

We lost Carol Spinney (Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch for almost 50 years), and René Auberjonois last Sunday. As an American younger than 50, Carol Spinney's impact on my life was no doubt the same as yours. René Auberjonois had more of an impact on me personally, as I felt like I was watching him on tv and in movies my entire life, from watching Benson with my parents to going to see Police Acedemy 5 with my mom to watching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (mostly by myself) to watching Boston Legal with my wife. Rene's characters were all different and were all him, and they were all fantastic. He always committed to a role and it showed. As a Star Trek Fan and a fan of his work, I was happy to finally meet René at a con in Richmond just this past June. It was his birthday, and he looked fantastic for 79. In an interaction that only lasted a few minutes, I feel that I can safely say that he was not only one of the nicest celebrities I've met, but also one of the nicest people in general. He was warm, gracious, genuine and clearly liked meeting fans, which not all of these folks on the con circuit actually do. Something almost none of them do, is that rather than pocket the money he made from signing autographs and taking photos to supplement his income, Rene would donate it to charities like Doctors Without Borders. I feel blessed that I got to meet him, and I'm very sad that there will be nothing new from him in the future.

Neil Peart. Died Jan 7th at 67 from brain cancer. He and the other guys all kept it quiet, respectfully letting him live the last few years of his life privately and unmolested.
Every drummer in the universe wants to be him, have even a scrap of his talent. Any lyricist worth their salt respects his ability to write. Incredible talent, and a kind person, who influenced more musicians and inspired more fans than few others have in rock music.

Fred Willard. The delivery of "Let's get the heck outta here" kills me. "I'll stop by the school a little later, Sister Margaret."

Alien might be my favorite movie of all time, and Ian Holm was just amazing in everything he was in. I'm sad that he's gone.
Nobody made as many good and bad movies as Joel Schumacher. I genuinely can't say where Lost Boys falls, but I love it and all of its camp, and Falling Down is a brilliant portrayal of an obviously mentally unwell man, who had just barely kept his shit together, on the day that he truly breaks and lashes out against the world around him (Joker ain't got shit on this movie), and it's one of my very favorite movies. Everyone who knew Schumacher says he was a very nice person, so regardless of what you or I think of his movies, his loss is a sad one.

Ian Holm was so different in Alien, I didn't even realize it was him. You hit the nail on the head with Schumacher and good/bad movies. Falling Down, Phone Booth, A Time to Kill and Lost Boys on the good side. Batman and Robin, Bad Company, The Number 23 and St Elmo's Fire on the bad side.

At 98, Carl Reiner definitely lived as long and full a life as practically anyone could, but some people, you wish they could go on forever. All you Jerks go check out Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It is a severely underrated gem. also, if ANY of you guys haven't heard any of his and Mel Brooks' 2000 Year Old Man routine, go find it. I think some of it's on youtube. GOLD!

I have a Reiner/Brooks 2000YOM LP, and my mom took us to see Dead Men at the theater. It didn't make a lot of sense then, but eventually it did. He was a great man.

Even without the Morricone score this scene would still be an all-time classic, but the music gives it that extra push over the cliff. RIP, Signor Morricone, you legend, you genius.
"In this world there are two kinds of people, my friend: those with loaded guns, *clicks the chamber on Tuco's empty gun* and those who dig. You dig."
Best goddamn western ever made.

Just saw that this brilliant and shy but easygoing and adventurous nerd, pictured here with me in 2011, died of a brain aneurysm yesterday. Grant Imahara replaced Scottie Chapman in season 3 of Mythbusters, which I forgave him for, because Scottie didn't want to keep doing the show, and Grant always reminded me of "What if Adam wasn't annoying? And also what if Adam was shorter, younger, and not pasty as fuck?" I only met him that one time, very briefly, but he was as nice as could be to a stranger asking him for a photo while he was on his way to check out Hobby Link Japan. He was 49.

John Lewis was an icon. America sucks right now, but it would be a much shittier place without his sacrifices and his service.

He could've made so many easy, bad, selfish choices because he was treated so badly his whole life by his country. But instead he always opted for the right thing, and to fight, and chose to make a difference in America. And he did. It's just a damn shame that after 60+ years of the work he's been a big part of we've barely moved forward with those changes. He at least got to see a big shift in momentum before he died. Hopefully it continues. The small children now and future generations are where it will show more and become honest and real. You can't change people, so the schism we still have now will exist until most of us are dead. But eventually.

It's worth mentioning John Saxon, who died of pneumonia Saturday at the age of 83. John wasn't the best actor in the world, but he was always consistent and was in some really great stuff like Enter The Dragon, Joe Kidd, The three best Nightmare on Elm Street movies, and Running Scared. He was also in Battle Beyond the Stars, which is great in a really cheesy stupid way.

His look and voice were quite unique. He seemed to show up in just about every TV show I watched as a kid.
