None of those other movies were based around killing a known world leader. They were involved, but in Team America Kim Jong Il turned out to be an alien. This was specifically about murdering a national leader. It's poor form at the very least. It's even more retarded that some yokels have started making it some goddamn patriotic fucking breaking point in their political lives.
I don't see it as being censored, really. Sony is doing it as a business move. They're likely to experience greater potential financial losses from putting it out. Capitalism beats terrorism. Simple.

Sadly, terror tactics have been working extremely well for the past 13 years. But the line "home of the brave" is still in the anthem. Irony!
I'm honestly surprised how pissed off this made me. It's just a stupid fucking movie, but the fact that they let a little tinpot dictator influence even this inconsequential an aspect of American life is just pathetic and one hell of a precedent to set.

Apparently it's more than just a movie now. That's unarguable. It sets a pretty dangerous precedent when you have an American film, even a stoner comedy, where the entire plot is about killing Kim Jong Un. Imagine how real-world dangerous it would be for the US if someone put out a movie where the USA makes a direct move to assassinate Putin.
They picked KJU because they figured he was harmless. But sometimes you have to do a little thinking about what you're actually telling the world when you greenlight something like this. There's a damn good reason we don't see movies like that. There's no need for patriotic grandstanding on this one. It's just stupid.

I thought Sadam Hussein got frozen and shattered in one of those Hot Shots movies or something. I remember it vaguely from my childhood.
I'm not patriotic except for fictional characters like Solid Snake and Jack Bauer, I just don't like that threats can get movies, that pass ratings standards, removed from theaters. And not to defend the movie, because I don't think its premise is good either--I was taken aback when I saw its trailer and it felt like a poor taste thing to me immediately, but South Park does that kind of stuff all the time. Tbough, I guess South Park has kind of mastered how to handle it properly.

He did, but that wasn't the point of the whole thing. That's my point! LOL And Kim Jong Il in Team America was a space cockroach, which transports the intent to a very different place. It's quite a different portrayal of such an incident. Bah, fuck it. It's not coming out, so whatever.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but didn't they kill Saddam Hussein in the South Park movie that came out when Saddam was still alive and in power? Somehow that movie managed to come out without causing an international incident. Nobody got hurt because it's JUST A FUCKING MOVIE.

I'd like to but Sony won't let me. Don't sweat it, the movie looks incredibly fucking stupid, and by all accounts, is. Sony might actually be happy this blew up in their faces. Figuratively, that is. For now.

Simpler times. Look, Saddam was a power hungry monster who had no illusions about his methods of ruling. The North Korean leaders are bred to believe they are gods. When you have a trailer that leads off with "We want you to kill the North Korean leader." you can only continue to go down from there. The other movies people are bringing up to defend this mess are not relevant. They're just dodges.

I dunno, I don't have a horse in this race, the way it's turned out just feels weird to me. Saddam's actual execution is on youtube, but this fictional comedy is taking things too far! But I guess it's because it's a corporation bowing to threats and not a government for a change.

But where does it end? North Korea successfully intimidated Sony into backing down, so do people really think nobody else will try the same thing? What if some Neo-Nazi group didn't like the way Inglourious Basterds ended with Hitler getting shot? Or what if Al Qaeda or ISIS decide they're tired of terrorists getting killed in American action movies? All they'd have to do would be to shoot off a quick email about "Blah blah blah don't show the movie blah blah 9/11 yada yada yada" and they'd have no reason not to expect to get their way.
Maybe it was a little bit reckless to make a movie about killing a real-world leader, but Charlie Chaplin made a movie making fun of Hitler and Mussolini in 1940. People have already mentioned the movies that "killed" Saddam Hussein when he was still alive. I don't see how this one is any different.

It doesn't end yet. Now Paramount is barring theaters like The Alamo Drafthouse from showing Team America: World Police in The Interview's place. Ya gotta admit, this is pretty ridiculous.

That movie Olympus Has Fallen isn't very nice to North Korea either. Better make sure nobody can see it.

OK, your examples are no good. Those are small groups with no real power, not a nation and its leader. So, no, those won't happen, and aren't effective in supporting your argument. I just don't get why the lines of distinction are so hard to see here. It's a highly provocative, and potentially dangerous move, to center the entire plot around assassinating a real-world person, especially one who has the power to lash out against it. That fat little boy views that as a direct threat from America. Of course he was going to have something done about it. At least you're not mistaking this for censorship or a freedom of speech issue.

Anyone who views themselves as a god deserves to be taken down a peg. Most of all, Kanye West. Now they're saying the US may be devising a cyber counterattack. The cyber wars have begun! We're living a cyberpunk dystopia. And it's not quite as cool as the movies made it seem.

Don't make me point out that you and Mitt are fighting the same fight right now. Anyone who views themselves as a god deserves to be taken down a peg. Most of all, Kanye West. I know you're mostly kidding, but that's not the point either. It has real world consequences, and does nothing to humble a scary person like Kim Jong Un. And remember, China has his back.

So the Alamo Draft House was planning on showing Team America: World Police (for free and handing out American flags to attendees) in place of The Interview on what would have been the film's opening day. Paramount will not allow it.

Even a stopped clock and Mitt Romney are right twice a day. But seriously, I still can't believe people are OK with this reaction. Because unless there are thousand of North Korean sleeper agents in the US waiting for their moment to strike, what exactly are we so afraid of? More hacks revealing Sony execs' embarrassing emails? And like Raz and Stewie pointed out, now they're canceling screenings of a movie from 10 years ago made with puppets. When did we all decide to be such pussies about one fat little Hitler?

Sony is backpedaling like crazy today over The Interview. "We have not caved. We have not given in." Of course not, all they did was give in to some vague threats and give the hackers who may or may not be connected to the North Korean government exactly what they wanted. Totally not caving in.

That's because Obama publicly criticized them for giving in. Ultimately, they did leave it in the big theater chains' hands and only officially pulled it once they unanimously decided against showing it, so I'm not sure why they aren't being held accountable as well. But it seems like everyone wanted to pass the buck on this one. Which also makes sense, because no stoner comedy is worth this kind of trouble lol.

It'll be years before a studio makes any more comedies that are even the slightest bit risky or "controversial". Enjoy the next 5 Paul Blart movies, America!

There's no way it was intended to be a publicity stunt, Sony pictures got effed hard in this whole thing and it will still be a huge loss to them overall. But the box office sales will be as if it was one.
