...not bad.
Anyone else reading it? I was afraid that the writers were just going to do their own thing with their own styles and sort of shit all over the material, but it's clear that they love the material and are trying very hard to respect it and do it justice.
My favorites so far are Silke Spectre, Minutemen, and Ozymandias.

Yepper, I'm digging them.
I think I was most "meh" about the first issue of the Ozy series, but I have a feeling it will wind up getting better as it progresses.

I like the Ozy one more than I thought I would. I was mostly meh about Nite Owl and Comedian. But feel about them the same way you do about Ozy.
The Crimson Corsair is pretty cool, too.

If anything I'll wait for the collections to come out before I read it. Something about reading Watchmen comics with ads just seems wrong.

^ It's totally lame, yes.
And btw, I still hate the idea of the thing, too. But what's done is done, and I think they could have done a lot worse with it.
I felt dirty when I purchased them.

I was in the shop last week and noticed they had dozens of copies of all the issues out so far left on the shelf, but they were totally sold out of "Saga". That made me feel good.

I read Comedian and Ozymandius. Enjoyed them both. Don't like the concept but the comic nerd junkie in me still needs to read it.

I get the whole "Watchmen is sacred" thing, but years of hearing people complain about every possible new thing involving the characters has gotten annoying. I love the characters, I love the movie, I love the fucking video game. I'm really excited to read new Watchmen stuff, just waiting for the trades.

I liked the movie too, but this thing is an even bigger "fuck you" to Alan Moore than that was. I'm not too concerned with his feelings since he's sort of a dick, but the way DC has defended themselves over this is pretty bad, especially in the interviews with JMS.

I just blurted out my frustration earlier, but it is a complicated and conflicting situation. Really, people are justified in saying none of this stuff should exist; I'm just sick of hearing it lol. Watchmen's whole point (at least I hope I'm interpreting it right) was to turn the concept of the super hero comic on its head and argue that superheroes are irrelevant in the modern world. so for prequel tie-in stuff to just showcase these characters in their superhero crime-fighting days goes against what the original work stood for.
However, we all like these characters enough that seeing more of them in things that are well-made and respectful of the original (like the new comics appear to be), should be a good thing. The movie established that new good things could be made from the original source material and from the reactions to these new comics it seems like most fans are enjoying them for what they are.
I think the main reason I'm frustrated by the outcry against new Watchmen products is because when I first played the demo for the Watchmen video game and liked it my uber-nerd friends acted like I was an asshole for enjoying playing out fight scenes that "had no business being in a Watchmen movie to begin with because Watchmen isn't about action or visual flare or things that are enjoyable and fun". The thing is they found the movie, fight scenes and all, to be just as awesome as I did; so what the fuck!? It just felt like I was ganged up on as part of this obligatory fanboy crusade for totally hypocritical reasons, so that whole attitude just gets to me now. It's justifiable to a point but there has to be a line where you let it go and just enjoy stuff for what it is.
As for the quality of the game, I'm not an idiot. It's a downloadable beat 'em up that's a huge ripoff for anything more than Gamestop's $10 asking price. It's in no way a great video game, but it does tie into the Watchmen mythology well without messing anything up. I just like it for what it is; a Watchmen movie fight scene simulator.
Riddick's the best movie game ever except for maybe some Star Wars stuff I haven't played yet. Last above average movie game that was more than a cash-grab was X-Men: Origins Wolverine. Actually Saw II: Flesh and Blood came out after that and while I've only played the demo it seems really good, and before everyone says they hate Saw - I know. But realistically, the most recent Transformers movie tie-in game is probably the last good one because I think High Moon did it and they make good games, but I don't play those. Oh yeah, the new Captain America and Spider-Man games appear to be decent too, even though they're both Arkham ripoffs; so damn... But Wolverine's the last one I enjoyed more than the average non-tie-in game.

I don't think they're sacred. And I could give a crap about dishonoring Moore. Not because we're supposed to hate him now, but because I never cared.
I said it before, they were created and existed to tell one specific story, and outside of that story they had no reason to exist. Their characters are dumb outside of that story. Whatever other stories they're a part of are just scraping desperately at sides of the container because someone's too lazy to open another jar of mayonnaise.
And because they know it will make them money. ;D

^ There's plenty of "new and dangerous" stuff happening in comics, just not at DC or Marvel.
Also, the name of this whole thing is just stupid. When the movie came out in 2009, DC capitalized on the hype by staring an "After Watchmen" advertising campaign for any old comics in their catalogue they thought were "edgy". Some of it made sense, like "V for Vendetta" and "Swamp Thing", but then they also started using it to pimp stuff like "Identity Crisis" (because I guess comics about superheroes getting raped is a real niche market for them). It all just left a bad taste in my mouth, even though I totally support anything that gets someone to walk into their local comics shop and I really liked the movie.
So when they decided to name their next shameless cash grab "Before Watchmen", it was too much. The name itself is too cute by half, and the obvious attempt to turn the best comic ever written into a brand-name franchise just pissed me off, whether Alan Moore thinks so too or not.

I dunno, I see lots of kids in the comic shop. Sometimes they're going through older stuff in the 25 cent bins or buying new stuff, but they're definitely there. I've been going to the same shop since I was 12, and the number of younger people in there keeps increasing. And on FCBD last May the shop was so full of people, parents with their kids and 20-something couples, people could barely move. It was busier than I've ever seen it. I'm not sure how many of those people left with a big stack of comics or how many have come back since, but I took it as a good sign. And as long as Batman and Avengers movies keep making billions of dollars, there will at least be a portion of that audience checking out the comics. Of all the kids at the shop on FCBD this year, I can almost guarantee that at least a few of them had just seen The Avengers and wanted to read some comics.
But to bring this back around to the topic, I don't think "Before Watchmen" is bringing in the flood of new customers that DC intended.

Anyway, I found Ozymandias and Comedian to be good reads. Looking forward to Rorshach. If the comics are well crafted then all this other shit is just noise to me.

I've never been into comics. I tried a bit. But I usually got one shots, and back issues.
I prefer one solid story I can sit down and read. I'm not much of a reader anyway, so while I can wait for a TV show, I couldn't wait on a book, or comic to finish the story.
More so a comic, since they're like 30ish pages long. And not at all worth 4 bucks IMO.
And I agree with Holes and Frin about this. Not needed.

LOL the amount of talent and effort that goes into the artwork and they aren't worth a couple bucks? You're uninformed, yo.
I only buy trade paperbacks these days because they display better and are more durable for trips and multiple read-throughs, but they also solve your problem of having to wait on the next issue. I gave you the same advice about anime but don't write off an entire medium until you've actually tried.

I almost picked that book up twice now. But I was short a few bucks.
And then I downloaded the entire series, and the hard drive I kept it on broke.
So what the fuck. God doesn't want me to read it.

DC just announced another 2-issue miniseries, "Moloch", by JMS (hack) and Eduardo Risso (maybe my favorite artist in comics).
Still, even with Risso drawing it, I'm still not curious enough to reward DC for this whole "Before Watchmen" project. And with every new miniseries they add to this thing my interest lessens. They're turning the greatest comic book ever made and turning it into a shameless cash grab, just another franchise to milk for all it's worth. Mark my words: within a year there will be some kind of "Before Watchmen" ongoing series. FUCK THIS SHIT.

The 1st issue of Rorschach was certainly a let down, aside form the artwork, that is.

The context is, he's kicking in a door on some guy in a porno theater.
Don't skip Minutemen though, OK, it's actually REALLY FUCKING GREAT! The others are meh. I enjoy them, but Minutemen is really worth a read. Seriously. This week's issue had me interested with every page, the art is fantastic, and the writing is surprisingly deep.

Yep. What you SHOULD read is Minutemen, Ozymandias, Nite Owl and Silke Spectre. Those are actually worthwhile.
Speaking of which, Ozymandias is totally gay Batman.
