Started watching lovecraft country but I dunno if I can stick with it. The racism stuff is so over the top and heavy handed that it's hard to take seriously even in a show where literal monsters exist.
There's one part where they're pulled over by a sheriff and he says that if they're not out of the county by sundown he'll hang them all which leads to this race agaist time to get across the county line with the sheriff behind them as they watch the sun go down and they're literally counting down, "We got 30 seconds!" with tense music playing.
The extreme and contrived lengths they were going to to try to create suspense was inadvertently comical.

You know that sunset towns and counties were a real thing, right? You know that lynchings happened fucking scary often, right? BTW, that massacre in the first episode of Watchmen happened in real life, too. How the fuck is this show heavy handed? It's in your face, and uncomfortable, and even extreme, because that's the kind of shit black people actually went through in the '50s (aside from the monsters, and magic, and ghosts and stuff, which are obviously metaphorical). That's the point of the show, and it doesn't sound like it's for you. We're three episodes in, and we think that overall it's pretty good. So far, my only complaints are that the Massachusetts Sheriff had a Southern accent (the kind of thing that happens from time to time when a show is filmed in Georgia) and that the Sons of Adam cult had a member named Epstein when it very much seems like the type of group that would not admit Jews.

Of course I know all that stuff happened, my family is from Mississippi, but in the way they used it in that situation was just silly. If the sheriff wanted to do something to them he was going to do it to them regardless. There was no need to have a goofy race agaist the sun like them making it across an imaginary line before dark was going to save them

And the part where they have the chase and shootout though town ending in a fatal crash but no one bothers to come looking for them or their very distinctive vehicle?
Yes, I know stuff like this really happened but they're just going way over the top with the way things play out.
I know it's just a show but my suspension of disbelief has a limit.

We lost interest in it even though I enjoyed the first episode. A little (or a lot) too over the top.

There are 10 seasons of Shameless on NF and we're on 3 right now. What a miserable fucking family the Gallaghers are. They all drive me nuts and everything just gets worse and worse. But they are a good cast and that's what makes it.

I was able to hang with Shameless until about season 8. The drama got dumber and the show just stopped being funny. I think it happened before that, but that's when I called it quits.

The shit with dude's uncle having had a secret affair with his late mother, and the dick snake thing, the whole liver thing, and Tony Goldwyn's hammy acting had us kinda turned off, but the third episode was a lot better. Still a little too much man ass, tho.

Still hanging in but it's much tougher than it used to be. We jumped on late to the show and watched an episode a night for weeks. Great in its heyday.

On one hand I'm glad there are 10 seasons because it means something to watch. But on the other I have been wondering how they can stretch being a broke-as-fuck loser family for so long. But there are so many other shows that suffer the same fate for money. I'd much prefer series that are determined beforehand to have a lifespan. But the 11th season, shooting now, is the last. So there's that.

That's at least three too many. Probably four or even five too many. Shameless peaked at season 6. Or it started to really nosedive in season 7. Either way.

So, last year, I caught the first episode of the Harley Quinn cartoon on a Canadian Youtube channel and thought it was trying too hard and not very good. I said as much over on another forum, and decided it wouldn't be worth my time. I don't have DC Universe, so no problem. Well, over the next couple of months, I randomly watched clips from the first season and actually really liked what I saw. Back in May when Syfy aired the first season uncensored and late at night, we recorded it and watched it. Once the first and second seasons wound up on HBO Max, we watched the second season, too. It's a really good, dark, funny, twisted, crude, frequently brilliant cartoon that somehow lovingly makes fun of the superhero genre. It's a lot like the Venture Bros but sillier and with way more blood and swearing. (And it doesn't have its head up its own ass like Rick & Morty.) Alternatively, one could say it's like something Troma might do, but good and without the gratuitous nudity. Not so bad, that it's ironically good, but seriously good. I still think the first episode was trying too hard, but the show figured itself out VERY quickly. Kaley Cuoco is the best Harley since Arleen Sorkin (and I am absolutely including Tara Strong and Margot Robbie), Lake Bell is FUCKING AMAZING as Poison Ivy, Alan Tudyk is great as the Joker but even better as Clayface, Ron Funches is HILARIOUS as King Shark, Jim Rash is great as the Riddler, Giancarlo Esposito is unsurprisngly excellent as Lex Luthor, the same thing can be said for Wanda Sykes as the Queen of Fables, the guy voicing Bane is funny as hell, Kiteman (!) is outstanding, etc. It's a great show and an easy binge.

I wasn't entirely sure where to put this, so here is Bruce Willis, obviously drunk, in this terrible and expensive commercial for Die Hard batteries:

I almost always mute when it's commercial time. Saw this during football and didn't feel like turning the sound on because it looked like, if it was a baby being born, it would have been a really messy c-section.

I was enjoying that queen's gambit series on netflix until I found out it's pure fantasy.
It's not nearly as interesting to watch a show like this after you find out none of it ever actually happened.

Cobra Kai is fucking awesome!
We were wrapping up a couple of other things before getting into it, but just finished S2 last night. It's a really enjoyable mixture of nostalgia, sitcom and soap opera. And, holy shit, the fight scenes are fantastic.
We might try the Queen's Gambit next.

I've been meaning to check that out, too. I need to OD the episodes do far. I kind of got the same vibe from him in the trailers that he had in Magnificent Seven. And he was really good in that.

Haunting of Bly Manor was okay. It should have been 5 episodes instead of 9 if they wanted it to be really good. But there's so much wasted time and space in there just to fit the episodes required that it gets very boring in long stretches. The kids were good actors, and the returning cast and new actors were all fine. It just suffered from being unnecessarily long.

Mrs. Griffin and I just started watching a show on Netflix called Norsemen. It's a half-hour comedy about Vikings with essentially the same sense of humor as What We Do in the Shadows. It's pretty fucking great.

Cobra Kai S3 was sweeeet! I dig that show more than I would ever have expected. They know how silly the world the characters exist in is and successfully navigate a path between earnestness and lampoon without ever being insulting to that universe. Making French Stewart act like a tough military guy in Stargate is as ridiculous as casting Crispin Glover as a terminator. But I love this movie.
