There was a scene in last night's Better Call Saul that was as good as Breaking Bad at its best. Several scenes in fact, but the scene with poor Lyle cleaning the fryer over and over to satisfy a sidetracked Gus... brilliant.

There was a free HBO weekend and we just managed to cram in Watchmen right under the wire.
Great fucking story! I'm glad Lindelof made it a one-and-done story, not holding anything back. Made it very satisfying with nothing really left hanging.

More Scooby Doo... Mrs. Griffin and I have been binging (kind of) Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated, which is probably the best Scooby Doo series. It's subversive and parodies the tropes of the older series and plays with common horror tropes and frequently references cult favorite horror movies like Hellraiser, Saw, Night of the Living Dead, and The Fog. It also mocks the shit out of the Twilight movies/books. And it flat out embraces the idea that Fred is a complete idiot who only knows traps. The girls, Daphne and Velma, are the only competent members of the gang, but of course, the gang only functions properly when they're all together. Udo Kier and Lewis Black also have recurring roles.

Just finished Tiger King on Netflix today. Gross. It's interesting, but every single fucking person in it is a puddle of runny shit. Pretty eye-opening for me about the whole big cat market in the US. We're a terrible species.
Then there's the new season of Ozark. They're all scumbags, too, but at least it's fiction. And it's good to see Ward from Iron Fist in something again. He's a solid addition here.
Money Heist starts Friday.

Just finished Star Trek: Picard. It borrows heavily from BSG and even Game of Thrones. We liked it overall, but it also had a lot of flaws. The worst episodes are co-written and/or directed by Akiva Goldsman, writer of Batman and Robin and The Dark Tower (movie).

I'd like to watch it someday. Thought about turning the CBS account back on again for it, since we use it for my wife to watch Big Brother. But I don't know when I'd get to it.
Didn't see Dark Tower, but it bombed and the writing sounds like why. Makes sense, B&R fucking ate Albert Pujols.

So there's about five or six good Picard episodes (still flawed) and four or five bad ones. Patrick Stewart is great, through and through, Jeri Ryan is great, Jonathan Del Arco is great, the new "crew" are great, almost everyone is great. The mystery girl the plot centers around, her character isn't particularly well developed or even thought out, but the girl is a good actress and she has presence, which goes a long way. There is one character who completely sucks, and there's an Admiral who seems to exist solely to yell at Picard say the word "fuck," but it is what it is.

Squeezed all of "I'm Not Okay With This" into one session the other night. Maybe 2-1/2 hours total, so not a big binge.
It was okay. It's almost completely reliant on 80s influence and there's nothing in there that is unique. But it was good enough to pass the time.

Schitt's Creek is great. Burned through 5 seasons, and the 6th just concluded. So it should be available to watch in fall.

Wife got me season 3 of Young Justice on Blu Ray for my birthday because it was easier than getting DC Universe or she's pissed at them for cancelling Swamp Thing or whatever. Don't care. Three episodes in and that shit is dark as fuck.

Since I'm not subscribed to HBO Go or Max or Plus or whatever they're calling it, I broke down and bought the expensive complete series Blu-ray box set of The Wire. This show has been on my "someday, eventually" list for a long time, but I never actually dove in until this week. I'm about halfway through season 2 right now, and holy shit, everyone was right. I should've watched this show years ago because holy fuck it is fucking good as fuck.

Last Tuesday, within about 2 hours, we went from musing about upgrading from the Comcast service we've had forever to picking up, installing and activating the receivers for their X1 service, finally moving into the HDTV world. Talked with someone on the phone and turns out it'll be less than what we've been paying for premium basic and meager internet, to get about 100 more channels and faster internet, with all the DVR bells and whistles and other stuff. It's neat telling the remote what to find for me, because I'm not lazy enough when I get home that pushing buttons is just too hard. Since POP is part of the upgraded channels, we got to watch the final season of Schitt's Creek, rather than having to wait for it to show on Netflix. Watching Running Scared right now for the millionth time. "Mother! Could I have some more petite marshmallows for my hot cocoa, please?"

So, Mrs. Griffin and I watched the first two episodes of Stargirl, and while she's less into it, I am really liking it. It helps that Berlanti only has his dumbass name on it, and the show runner is Geoff Johns, who created the character and wrote the comics. What a novel concept. It reminds me a lot of Bumblebee, which is not at all a bad thing. Brec Bassinger is surprisingly good (she's genuinely good), Luke Wilson is great, Amy Smart is good, so far, the acting from pretty much everyone has been at least solid. Johns wrote the first two episodes, and I am somewhat concerned about what will happen once an episode airs that he didn't, but so far, really damn good.

Stargirl has not maintained it's level of quality from the first two episodes.
Mrs. Griffin and I just finished She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (aka "The Netflix reboot"). Overall, it's a pretty good, at times great cartoon. Most of the characters are super irritating, but Adora and Catra are fantastic, Entrapta is super entertaining, and even Hordak is surprisingly three-dimensionsal. Horde Prime is a mix of every major sci-fi villain from Brainiac and Darkseid to Emperor Palpatine and the Borg(nothing original there, but none of it really is, and it's handled well). The humor is usually funny, and it tackles some difficult subjects quite well. One of my favorite things about it was even though there's frequent mentions of "Eternia" and "Grayskull," they never say what those things are, and there is absolutely no mention of Adora's real family or her muscley just-barely-in-the-closet twin brother. It's no Avatar: The Legend of Korra, but I was surprised at how much I liked this cartoon for girls that my wife very much wanted to watch.

Can't tell if Frin agrees with me about Stargirl, if he was also pleasantly surprised and generally pleased with the new She-Ra, or if he just also likes the idea of toxic He-Man fanboys' heads exploding because the lesbian creator and showrunner of a cartoon for girls didn't throw them a bone. All of the above are cool.

No idea about Stargirl. I think a new She-Ra is cool, though. Haven't watched it, but it's always nice when something can do well without needing a crutch and it sounds like this has. It's apparently triggered people who are weak. I'm going to assume many of the old boardies and the people I remember from Sideshow have all had crying fits over it.

And then they complain about "the gay agenda" and then go off and watch the old He-Man and She-Ra shows. I am not speaking hyperbolically, but essentially quoting an Arkansas fucknob on one of the other boards that I frequent because the owner runs monthly contests for $100 credits to BBTS. On another subject, Cobra Kai is moving to Netflix, which I couldn't be happier about, because it's also a damn good show and Youtube Red or Youtube Premium or Youtube Whateverthefucktheycallit can just fuck right the hell off. I hope we'll see Season 3 before the end of the year.

Whenever someone in the geek/fandom community is complaining about the "gay agenda" it usually means one of two things. They're either upset about a) the character design of a female character changing and it no longer gives them a boner, or b) what was subtext about He-Man in the 80s is much less subtle now and that *does" give them a boner and it scares them. Either way it's boner-related. They call it homophobia for a reason.
Also, I finally started watching the Harley Quinn show that's on the DC streaming service. I don't subscribe to that one so I got the first season on DVD and it's a really good show. It's violent, funny, and best of all it nails the sweet goofball characterization of Harley that I've missed in some of the other versions of her. Still weird hearing anybody other than Arleen Sorkin do her voice though.

LOL @ subtext. I mean, you could call it that, I guess. Unless it's somebody like Shartimus Prime, who I unfortunately know exactly what he looks like, whenever I see one of these closeted toxic pricks complaining about She-Ra or whatever online, I always picture the guy who paid Dirk Diggler to jerk off and then beat the shit out of him.
Mrs. Griffin and I watched the first season of Harley Quinn when they ran it on SyFy a month or so ago. I liked it a lot. Lake Bell is fucking amazing as Poison Ivy.

Oh man, is Shartimus Prime a toxic dudebro? His persona comes off that way in his review videos, but that's the only exposure to him online I've seen. And I kinda like his reviews. But if he's a douche in forums whining about how She-Ra isn't hot anymore, then fuck that dude.

He's pretty quiet in the forums, but his entire persona comes off as toxic in his reviews, and that's enough for me. If it's an act, that's just as bad, IMO. I know he's a He-Man fanboy, but I can't say for sure that he's been complaining about Adora being "not hot" or "Social Justice Warriors" or the "Gay Agenda" or "Lesbians" on that show, as I tend to avoid his videos, and I'm definitely not one of his patreon patrons. I mean, I suppose he could have a dummy account on some forums and complain about it under another name. I have seen him complain about female Marvel Legends figures being "too flat" and having "Small booties" and whatnot in his reviews, and I didn't need to hear more. I fucking hate that voice he does, too. I seem to recall him being pretty bad about Captain Marvel when that movie was coming out, but I didn't pay close attention. I honestly just used him as an example of a toxic jerkoff whom I've actually seen, both in videos, and in person, as opposed to one that's generally anonymous aside from a board handle. I can tell you that Jay Cochran, while he was never complaining about that other stuff, he would complain repeatedly about how they kept not getting to the "Eternia connection," but that really doesn't make Jay an asshole. Anyway I don't want to go on about this, as it's starting to feel like gossip.
So...Lake Bell...Poison Ivy...awesome. I love Ron Funches's King Shark, too. Great show, Harley Quinn.

Yeah, Poison Ivy rules on that show. So far Clayface is my favorite of Harley's crew. Brilliant use of that character. And I had never heard of Queen of Fables before this show. I thought she was an original creation for the show (like Harley was on BTAS), but nope, she first appeared 20 years ago. Even the bit about the Justice League trapping her inside the US Tax Code is straight from the comics. Huh.

I really like Clayface on that show, too, and while I'm a big fan of Alan Tudyk, I kinda wish he was only voicing Clayface and someone else was Joker. It doesn't have to be Mark Hamill. I feel like they sound a little too similar sometimes. It's like Frank Welker voicing both Fred and Scooby in post 2001 Scooby Doo stuff. Doesn't seem right to me.

I think the writers of the CW DC shows have officially forgotten they're doing super hero shows and not teen dramas/soap operas.
The flash was one of the last decent ones left but I started up season 6 on netflix and 80% of the scenes in the first two episodes involve someone crying about sonething.
I think I might have to bow out.

I think I might have to bow out. I don't watch any of that Berlanti-created shit. Started watching a couple shows (Arrow in the beginning and Supergirl in the beginning) but couldn't hang with them. Stargirl, which was thankfully created by Geoff Johns started off VERY strong, and has gotten a bit worse with each teenager that's been introduced, but this last episode, which still had a bunch of teen angst and awkwardness and whathaveyou, was still better than damn near anything I've seen on the other CW shows, so...yeah. There's that. I just wish Geoff Johns had written every episode. It would be totally unrealistic to expect that, but it would at least have kept the show at a consistent level of quality. The girl who plays Courtney is very good and Luke Wilson and Amy Smart, unsurprisingly are pretty damn great, as well, but I kinda feel like the show might be at a point where they're just carrying it a lot of the time.

I had blocked out how horrible Tommy Lee Jones and Jeff Bridges both were in Blown Away. Their accents are distracting to the point of it being nearly unwatchable. Not that it's a very good movie anyway. The Irish accent Forest Whitaker did for 2 seconds was better than Jones. And Bridges doing his Boston accent made Costner's attempt at a British accent seem good.

Costner didn't even attempt a British accent (technically he did, but it was so bad Kevin Reynolds told him to stop). He just spoke very clearly.

The few times Costner tried stick out so much. The rest was a weird sing-song thing, not just enunciation, that became more distracting than his wig. Like when Mike Teavee suddenly went British in Willy Wonka, or Leia when she's talking to Tarkin.
