Apparently there's a new 30th anniversary Blu-ray edition of Aliens out. It's the same disc from the Anthology set, but in fancy new packaging with a sweet cover and some "collectible" inserts of old comic book covers and concept art. It's also only 10 bucks, and I think I want one even though I already have the movie on both DVD and Blu-ray. I'm a sucker for cool new packaging and $10 Blu-rays. I guess the sign you really love a movie is when you're willing to buy an extra copy because they made some cool new cover art.

I just saw that in Walmart a little while ago buuuut it was right next to the 30th Anniversary Edition of Transformers the Movie (the real one from the 80s) so I walked away with that instead. I can finally retire my VHS copy now.

I checked Best Buy and Target for the Aliens 30th Blu, but neither place had it. But Target did have the new 30th Anniversary edition of Labyrinth, so I got that. Sorry Aliens, but Labyrinth is my personal favorite movie of 1986 and in my Top 10 of all time. As a kid it's a funny fairy tale with cool Muppets and fart jokes, but watching it as an adult it works on an entirely different level. The story is a surprisingly deep metaphor for adolescence (that junkyard scene...), that also has cool Muppets and fart jokes. It also introduced me to one of my favorite musicians of all time, so that movie has a lot going for it and means quite a lot to me personally. The introduction to the Goblin King and the labyrinth, the junkyard, the ballroom scene, the MC Escher room... the movie is a masterpiece where practically every scene has multiple meanings.

And apparently the only new featurette added to the Aliens 30th Blu (the "All New bonus feature!" advertised on the package) is digital only, with a code you use to access a streaming video. Think I'll pass on this version after all.

Figured I'd bump this thread in memory of John Hurt. That dude was pure class. He had an incredibly wide-ranging career but I'll always remember him for the single greatest death scene in the history of movies. You know the one.

New Alien: Covenant trailer...
The Prometheus haters will pile on as they are wont to do, but I've always been a staunch defender of that movie. My guess is the planet in Covenant is the one Shaw and David flew off to at the end of Prometheus. It might not be the homeworld of the Engineers, but we can see lots of their handiwork in that trailer. Weird dome structures, infectious fauna, Xenomorphs that are beginning to look more and more like the one that killed the Nostromo crew... you can see the line being drawn to connect these movies to the original Alien. But I'm still not sure of the timeline. Most of the events in Prometheus take place in 2094, with Alien taking place 30 years later. So this new movie fits somewhere in between, probably years after Shaw and David's ship landed on the planet.
Whatever. I'm stoked.

Fascinating. It was never the violence in the Alien movies that drew me in, although I do always appreciate movies not shying away from it in order to give a greater sense of realism and stakes. I just don't like gratuitous violence for the sake of itself.
To be honest it looks like it's almost a straight reboot of Alien, but I'm ok with that. Better than Alien: Resurrecshit. And despite my love/hate relationship with AVP and my guilty pleasure AVP:R, I'm glad those aren't continuing.
I hope Neil Blommkamp still gets to make Alien5 and I really hope The Predator is awesome.

I'm afraid Blomkamp's Alien movie is DOA. I hope I'm wrong because I'd love to see what he comes up with, but he doesn't sound very optimistic about its chances of happening.
And I feel the same way about the Alien movies. It was never the violence that drew me to them, it was the design work. The sets, the costumes, the spaceships, everything. And as far as I'm concerned. the design of the Alien itself (the original Giger design, with the smooth dome) is the single coolest creature design in movie history. It's elegant and terrifying all at once. The dome-less Cameron Aliens and the Queen are classics, no doubt about it, but the original Big Chap will always be my favorite.

I just scored tickets to see Alien tomorrow night at this kickass local theater. It's the closest thing to an Alamo Drafthouse we're likely to get in town here. You can't buy food or beer, but they show older movies and current indie, under-the-radar movies in a brand new, state of the art theater with an AMAZING sound system. I saw Blade Runner there a few years ago, and it was one of the best movie-going experiences I've ever had.
I've never seen Alien in the theater before so I'm pretty stoked.

Nice! Love seeing classic movies for the first time in theaters. I didn't see Aliens or Robocop in theaters, and I saw them at a popular theater like that in the Castro (same name) here in SF for a double feature. It was amazing.

Hot damn that Alien screening was awesome. It was the original theatrical cut projected digitally with knock your socks off audio, so it was the same movie I've seen tons of times, but bigger and louder. The scene where Dallas is down in the air vents looking for the Alien and he turns around and OH MY GOD IT'S RIGHT THERE!!! is awesome and still an effective jump scare, even more so on the big screen. Even the "Last Supper" scene gains some newfound effectiveness seeing it in a theater.
Alien is one of those movies I know basically beat-for-beat, but seeing it that way for the first time was still a huge blast.

Happy Corporate Synergy Movie Promotion Day Alien Day! Have a great time buying all the exclusive products out today celebrating the entire franchise by watching all the movies Alien and Aliens. 20th Century Fox thanks you for helping with the viral promotion of Alien: Covenant, because after we lost Star Wars this is the only space franchise we have left we love these movies as much as you do!
Christ I hate these stupid fucking forced Franchise Days. At least Star Wars Day started as a joke before it got co-opted into a promotional machine. I make fun, but I still bought NECA's exclusive Kenner Vasquez figure, because it's Vasquez and Vasquez is awesome.

That made me laugh, but I'm glad there's an Alien Day as an excuse for cool Alien/Aliens related items to be released.
I'm 99% sure I'm going to have to get the exclusive Kenner Vasquez but I'm letting it sit in the cart while I make peace with the fact that I'll have to pay $16 shipping for two of 'em since they're only available through NECA's online store.
I'm wondering if any other cool exclusives'll pop up today. Last year's Alien Day Loot Crate was awesome.
My Alien Day goals are to read more of my giant Aliens/Predator/AvP/Prometheus Fire And Stone hardcover and spend like 6 hours making 5 more minutes of progress in Alien: Isolation.

They released a short little prologue to Covenant that directly connects the dots from Prometheus to the new movie. My guess is these are the first few minutes of Covenant, similar to the prologue sequence in Prometheus. It's pretty much the stuff I was hoping for in a Prometheus sequel, but I guess this will have to do. I'm glad to see they're not ignoring Prometheus altogether, since that's actually a damn good movie and everybody who hopped on the "IT SUCKS!!!" bandwagon is wrong and stupid.

That prologue was cool. And I thought the dinner scene teaser that aired during FX's Legion was decent. I will be seeing Covenant.
I would like all of this stuff if it didn't mess with the continuity of my favorite movie ever (Aliens) and the already perfect alien lifecycle (the one that includes the Queen). I'm currently reading the Dark Horse Prometheus/Aliens/Avp/Predator 'Fire And Stone' crossover to try to dislike Prometheus' additions to the canon less. It hasn't been too successful at that yet but it has pretty pictures.

The xeno lifecycle has been confusing since the very beginning. Why do they kill some people, but bring others back to the nest alive to be facehuggered? And even though the elements Prometheus added confuse things further, I think they enhance more than they detract. It's one of the reasons I still really like that movie, internet hive-mind be damned. And I read those Fire and Stone comics when they first came out, and they started out great (I loved the Prometheus and Aliens stories), but towards the end things got a bit out of control. There's a sequel crossover wrapping up right now called Life and Death that's much better. Also, the other piece of merch I ordered yesterday was this cool shirt: And while I was at that site (Mondo Tees, they have some great stuff) I also saw this 2001 shirt I had to have: They weren't exactly cheap, but I can never have too many t-shirts in the closet.

Awesome xeno shirt!
Flipping through the pages I was surprised to see that the Fire And Stone stories follow the same characters throughout the different titles. I can see how that could get pretty difficult to carry out successfully. This is the first hardcover that I've actually regretted buying due to how large it is lol, it's the size of 6 other TPB's. I got it on Amazon so I was not expecting that.
I think the xenos capture when they're able to and kill if they perceive too much of a threat. Or they capture just so I can write my what-if Apone and Hudson survived fan-fiction. The Queen took the confusion out of the lifecyle. I get that horror is scarier if it can't be fully understood, but when you've grown up with a story you love that makes sense only to have it muddled for the sake of more movies, that's not a plus for me. But, we'll see what Covenant does.

Well, it walks like a damn Falling Skies alien. Not sure how I feel about that. Otherwise, yeah, the head doesn't look as bulky as the Covenant trailer which I thought was a cool design choice for the new xeno. And I still don't like translucent domes on the xenos.

But, we'll see what Covenant does. Does the Fire & Stone hardcover collect the issues in chronological order, or does it lump all the different miniseries together? It was published as 4 different miniseries, and while the Aliens and Prometheus stories can be read by themselves, the Predator and AVP stories were interconnected so much that one wouldn't make sense without reading the other. And what made it worse was they published them all out of order, making it feel like watching a DVD with the chapters on shuffle. I went back and re-read the whole story in the right order, and while it was easier to follow, it got pretty stupid there towards the end. The sequel Life & Death crossover is much better because it releases one miniseries at a time, so you're not reading the beginning of the story and the final act at the same time.

Other shots from the trailer suggest it walks around on two legs like a normal xeno. And I really dig the figure. I love how the tube/pipe things on the back (is there a name for those?) are longer than we're used to.

Interesting, it has the miniseries' separated by title. You'd think they would collect them in reading order. I'm near the end of the Prometheus story at the moment. I did like the effect the Prometheus black goo had on the android. I saw there's a flashback mini story with Hicks too, that's kind of cool. So that's not just a crouching pose? That's how it's going to walk around? Yeah that's kind of lame if you ask me. I think they just put it in that pose to match the shot from the trailer. I love how the tube/pipe things on the back (is there a name for those?) are longer than we're used to. I forget where I first learned this, but they're called dorsal tubes. I think the extended look is a cool addition too. Overall, I prefer this xeno design over Alien 3, Resurrection, AvP, and AvP:R. I just hope the dome is cloudy enough that the human skull isn't visible in the front. Seeing the eye sockets has always thrown off the design for me.
