I was looking forward to exploring the breakdown of society, and seeing how things fell apart.
I did not get even a hint of that.
Well, fuckdamn.
First mini-season has aired and I've decided I don't give a shit about any single character, and I'm not impressed with the story created. They rushed through to the reality of living in the daily apocalyptic wonderland so fast, but still somehow managed to make it boring as fuck in getting there.
I guess we're going to get a little Waterworld action with them moving to the water.
I wanted to have good things to say about it. I just don't. Anyone seeing things differently?

I've decided to skip it completely for the foreseeable future
the main show is started to wear pretty thin its self right now
this last season was all over the place, it didn't seem to have any focus

^Last season felt like 2 completely separate seasons, with boring filler in the middle. I liked the second half more than I've liked it since season 3 I think, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this season goes. To me, the whole series has been one of the most hit-and-miss shows ever.
I thought Fear The Walking Dead was alright, it made for an entertaining marathon before season 6. I liked that we got to see the transition from normal life to zombie apocalypse since they skipped past it in the main series. It's really nothing we haven't seen before done better in other things like 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, the Dawn Of The Dead remake, the Romero Dead movies, and War Of The Worlds 2005 even though it's aliens. But it was kind of cool and refreshing that they were able to spend more time than a movie in that stage of the outbreak.
A few standout things I didn't like (spoilers):
- The junkie wore the dead old man's clothes for the whole season even though he got back to his house with, I'm assuming, all of his actual clothes by like episode 2 or 3.
- I hated the junkie saying it's like he's always been living in the zombie apocalypse and now it's like everyone else has caught up. So fucking cheesy.
- I don't understand the scene at the end of episode 5 with the torturer approaching the army base and hearing the zombies inside, then at the beginning of next episode he's back at the house torturing. Was that a dream sequence, a flash forward, or did I just miss something?
- I don't know where the zombie horde came from at the end, how the army didn't see them coming, and how the torturer strolled into the military base with no fear of being shot or eaten.
- Having a conversation with someone while a zombie eats them should not be possible, the zombie would not be okay with it.
Overall, I thought it a decent distraction and 6 episodes was a good length, it didn't have time to overstay its welcome. I don't particularly like any of the characters, I'm mostly indifferent to them; but that's a step up from the main series where I've disliked a lot of the characters. Maybe it's because they just haven't had a chance yet, but the characters in this series haven't done too many obnoxiously stupid things yet. I will say there's nothing good about the son who films things.
One thing that set this series apart was that the action moved so much throughout the 6 episodes. In the regular series, they're usually holed up in one place for a while and everything revolves around that place, but here it was cool to see things transition from the church to the school to the neighborhood to the makeshift army base. Like frin said though, it's somewhat disappointing that they've already made it to the full-blown zombie apocalypse, I guess it'd be hard to stretch it out too long but it makes you wonder how it will be much different from the main series moving forward. I'm not exactly hyped to see where it goes next, but I'll probably be bored enough to check it out when it comes back around.

The fourth and fifth episodes were fucking great. Episode six not so much.
To answer your question Raz, you didn't miss anything, but it doesn't seem like you paid attention, either. Private skinless told Salazar about the zombies in the stadium, he went and confirmed that he was telling the truth, and returned to try to get more information and to formulate a rescue plan with Maddie. As far as strolling up to the base checkpoint with 2,000 zombies behind him, I suppose he drove partway to stay a good length ahead of them, and he wasn't too worried about getting eaten since he did say later in the episode, "Don't worry. They're slow." Plus, I think it was pretty clear that after El Salvador (regardless of what side he was on), nothing really scared him. Regardless, it was one of those sequences that was written and shot to look cool without anyone behind the scenes putting much more though into it. It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me at the time, and even now, after thinking about it, and puzzling out how it could have played out, it still doesn't make that much sense. I find it funny that they brought back Talking Dead. No matter how shitty, or cheesy an episode (Travis crying in the mud on the beach is my new favorite silly ass thing that somebody clearly thought would be something else), he still has to come on and say "WOW! THAT WAS FUCKING COOL. HOLY SHIT! NICK'S BEEN LIVING THIS FOR A LONG TIME, AND NOW EVERYBODY'S CAUGHT UP WITH HIM. THEY ALL MADE IT OUT OF THE COMPOUND ALIVE, ONLY FOR LIZA TO FIND OUT SHE'D BEEN BITTEN AFTER THE FACT--ISN'T THAT INTENSE? POINTS!"

LOL I don't watch Talking Dead but I've always wondered how they discuss the really dumb moments that happen often in these series'. That's hilarious. Regarding the base scene at the end of episode 5, I just didn't think it was close enough, or easily accessible enough for him to go check it out, then go back home like it was nothing. The editing and sense of time there just threw me off and left me with some questions. And I was putting together one of the McFarlane Walking Dead building set things while watching so it only had about 80% of my attention.

Hardwick sucks. I haven't watched Talking Dead for about two years, but unless something changed, that's pretty much how he talks about an episode's dumb moments: there are no dumb moments and everything was soooo cool.

If I was getting paid to hype up a couple of shitty TV shows I'd probably oversell it too.

Sounds like a worthy prequel to The Walking Dead to me. I gave up on that show after season 3. It's not terrible, just aggressively mediocre and really fucking boring. A while ago I tried to get back into it, like maybe there was something I was missing that would make things click for me, but I couldn't even make it through the third season. Still not sure how they managed to take the Governor storyline and bungle it so perfectly, but boy did they.

I hate to admit it, because I wish F/X and AMC nothing but the best in bringing series that regular nutwerx are too afraid to try, but TWD and FTWD are not very good.
I guess that is the attitude we should all have to keep them on their toes though.
But I'll keep watching anyway........dammit.

I honestly think these shows could benefit from not being on basic cable
an unrestricted format like a premium channel or netflix would do the show a lot more justice
while they do get away with showing a lot of gore they have to really tone down a lot of the other themes from the comics
like rick having to say "they're screwing with the the wrong people" didn't have the same impact of the comic when he says "they're fucking with the wrong people"
that one word changes the whole tone of the show

IMDB's top 10 best episodes list does remind you that there have been some standout moments, even if it feels like there have been an insane amount of incredibly dumb ones and long stretches of boring filler: www.imdb.com/falltv/top-10-episodes-of-the-walking-deadI didn't realize the Governor stuff went into season 4 as well. This whole time I've been saying season 3 is the only one I've really liked, because the whole Governor story arc reminded me a lot of LOST, but with zombies. So, I guess it was a season and a half that I consistently enjoyed. As soon as they got to the prison they stopped doing dumb stuff, the worst characters got killed off, and every episode the conflict between Rick's group and the Governor intensified. Loved it. Then as soon as they left it got boring and kind of dumb again, but to me the season 5 finale left off at the most interesting point since.

Dudes, I happened to flip across the episode with Shane's ENOUGH speech just as he was starting it. I was reminded of some of the greatness of the series, and I can't fathom muddling through with this new crop of fucknuts coming to the same conclusions The Punisher knew all along. It's the same argument Mr. Yac and I had a few times. And, Yaccy, I'm sorry I haven't drawn you a picture in over a month, my ass is still busy as fuck-all. But these people live in a world where the idea of "society" is something that has to be put on the back burner, and they have to shoot and slash their way into the future. It's a society of black blood and burning. At some point everyone will "meet in the middle" and they can work out from there to rebuild. But for now, it's simply survival.

I'm really looking forward to seeing him as The Punisher. I don't know what I'm more excited about the fact that there's going to be more Daredevil or the fact that it's going to have Punisher in it.

What Michonne did to the Governor in the comic was fucking crazy. Did they change that in the show? Did he make out his zombie daughter in the show? Just curious how much they kept from the comic for that story.

And Michonne cut his balls off. And halved his dick, lengthwise, and plucked his eye out with the same spoon she shoved up his anus and swirled about.

Yeah, he was a real monster in the comic, and deserved to be kept alive, just barely and in excruciating pain, for 17 years before being allowed to die, for the shit he wrought on people.

Interesting, but I thought it played out well on the show. Going that extreme in a live-action format probably would've come across more like Grindhouse style parody.

I kind of went back and forth on that angle, and for the TV series as it's been plotted from the start, they went as far as they needed to. The 2 Governors are nothing alike aside from the fish tank head collections. The TV Governor was just a crazy asshole with control issues. Comic Governor was Sean Hannity's off-camera self.
In the comic, Michonne was held captive in a storage unit by the Napoleonic cunttard for an extended period and made to endure all manner of violent tortures. So her revenge was wonderfully justified there.
