Not that it saves anything, but I think the placebo thing was supposed to be a lie Einstein was telling to cover her ass.

I thought about that but I hated the episode so much I didn't want to watch it again to check.

Not that it saves anything, but I think the placebo thing was supposed to be a lie Einstein was telling to cover her ass. That's what I was hoping and it would've made the story significantly less sucky, but after Skinner leaves there are a couple conversations where Einstein reinforces that it was just a placebo and at the very end Mulder and Scully explain the trip once again as the power of suggestion, which is supposed to tie into the half-baked premise of the episode that the power of suggestion can be a tangible force. Yeah, maybe if you're in The Matrix.

I just don't understand why no one on the creative or marketing team said "hey, this script is really bad, isn't there anything else you can come up with for an episode in a 6 part season?" before they even filmed it

Chris Carter is in charge. Writer, producer, and director. Like I said on the last page, the writers who used to keep him in check weren't involved, and the other writers on the middle episodes said they wrote isolated from each other and Carter with just a general outline of where things are now and suggestions to talk about William as often as possible. From everything I've read, there was no one to give Carter any criticism or even any kind of feedback.

Just finished the finale. As it was made to complete the first episode, it had all the same problems. Some decent ideas, just presented in a super rushed way that made them come across as sloppy and comical. It was like a montage of bad Resident Evil cutscenes. And yeah, ending on a cliffhanger again just made it feel pointless. I guess they'll continue in whatever the series X-Files: Origins will be. If they are passing the torch to the younger Agents that seems...poorly conceived.

ROFL! That was the scene where I was like oh god, the X-files has turned into the last boss fight of every Resident Evil game.

I was distracted during all the Smoking Man's scenes because I kept waiting for them to explain how he survived taking a goddamn missile in the face in the series finale. Turns out the answer was "skin grafts".
But I can't really fault Chris Carter too much. 14 years isn't nearly enough time to come up with 6 new story ideas.

Just leaving this here. He wasn't just burned. He was incinerated. In slow motion.

Or just bring back Krycek. He only got shot in the head, much easier to explain how he could survive than a guy whose face we saw get incinerated down to the bone.

Maybe he had secretly been enhanced before that scene somehow and it'll be explained later.

Enhanced by what? He was fucking vaporized. Carter very clearly decided he hadn't died and gave him third degree burns because A) He regretted killing the character in a way that was so final, B) He forgot that he was completely incinerated, or C) He just doesn't give a shit. It's sloppy. It's lazy. And he's not going to "fix" anything when there's nobody telling him he's doing anything wrong. Shit, it would have been better to not do the skin grafts thing and just bring him back, healthy(ish) with or without the poorly conceived tracheotomy (makes sense until you realize he needs a cannula to keep that fucking thing open), and just give no explanation at all. Leave it a fucking mystery. He's the Cigarette Smoking Man, and it's the X-Files.
Also, I know these things are ingrained in the X-Files mythology, but in a pre-Tea Party America people didn't really pay attention to conspiracy theories like the ones on the show. Maybe in 2016, one might want to think twice before talking about dangerous vaccines and having an obvious Alex Jones analogue being the voice of reason and the person the people can tune in to for what are turning out to be (in universe) facts about a government out to get them.

I rewatched the trash man episode and realized they never even attempted to explain how the trash man existed or what the things in the hallway were
in most episodes there's a little narration at the end by moulder or scully but this one was just, oh, the homeless guy's mind did it, case closed
they were too focused on scully's mom, who frankly, after two decades, no one gives a shit about

They did about as good a job explaining Band-Aid Nose Man's existence (Trashman was the artist) as they did most of the monster of the week episodes from the older run of the series. Trashman drew or painted or sculpted him and those things in the hallway and they somehow became real through pretty traditional supernatural X-Files means. They just did.

it just seemed weird to me
they found the dude, he "explained" what was happening and then everyone was just like, "oh, ok...moving on"
let's just let this dude that can create things with his mind that can rip people apart casually stroll off to who knows where to do who knows what without a second though, lol

Like Cap or like Knowle Rohrer? Either way, I like what I said better. I see where you're going, but if CSM had been infected and turned into an alien hybrid, known as "Super Soldiers" in seasons 8 and 9, and hence could regenerate from the smallest parts of themselves, there would be no fucking need for skin grafts and the whole burn victim thing. It would have been a totally plausible, albeit a bit silly, explanation had they not done that shit. It really can't fix anything now. It's reeks of laziness.

I hear ya. Super Soldier or cloning would have been the best options. But fucker went with skin grafts, which has now become symbolic for his lazy, messy, half-cocked, and out of hand writing and direction in this latest batch of episodes.

whoever did those skin grafts better be the highest fucking paid doctor in the world
not only did he give the dude an entire new face/muscles/eyes but he somehow made it look just like his old one, that's some skill

Don't forget new organs and even new bones, because the more I watch that clip, the more it looks like if he's not completely vaporized, which I'm still convinced he his, then his skeleton explodes after all the soft tissue is incinerated.
