I've been posting so much about Resident Evil in the "What Are You Playing" thread recently between playing RE6, Darkside Chronicles, & Operation Raccoon City that I figured it could use its own super-thread. For the hardcore fans, it's one of those series' that never quite leaves you and demands to be revisited often. There are so many movie, novel, comic book, action figure, and side-game tie-ins, and here we can discuss all of it, along with upcoming series news, in one place.
"You have once again entered the world of survival horror" Upcoming Game Releases-Resident Evil: Revelations HD (360/PS3) - 5/21 Upcoming Action Figure/Collectibles Releases-Play Arts Kai RE6 Leon - TBA -Play Arts Kai RE6 Helena - TBA Rumored - Source: tinyurl.com/re-rumors-RE6: Final Hope (WiiU) - Gold Edition, supposedly w/ new Claire campaign -RE: ORC sequel titled "Operation Terrestrial Fear" **Please avoid spoilers until we get spoiler tags back. Even though everyone interested in this thread has likely played most of the games, completing all of them hasn't been made especially easy thanks to console exclusives and stuff. (what I'm trying to say is I haven't played RE:0 )

I completed Chris' campaign in RE6. I think I did something wrong at the last boss because it took me like a half hour of doing the same thing until he died. So that sucked, but is a minor negative in the grand scheme of a campaign pretty much close to being worthy of following up RE5. It's unfortunate that it had to be shorter due to RE6's 4 campaign deal, but it was probably around 1/3rd of RE5's length and what was there was quality stuff for the many reasons mentioned in the previous thread. It was a freakin' blast the whole way through, barring said last boss and the few die-if-you-don't-run-fast-enough sections. Having finished it, what I said in the other thread holds true, even though Leon's campaign was digital torture, this campaign alone was awesome enough to justify the $20 the game cost me. The ending was freaking hardcore and playing as Piers had a really cool payoff as was hinted at in a tips thing I read on some website beforehand. New companion characters tend to suck in this series and that certainly applies to Helena, but Piers is a fuckin' badass. I give it a 9/10.

I beat Sherry/Jake's RE6 campaign. I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed melee'ing the shit out of everything with Jake. I was super opposed to how far they took the melee when I played even the non-Jake sections of the demo and I probably would like to see it dialed back in future games, but it functioned well, was fun, and added some variety. I thought this campaign started out amazing, the mountain vistas reminded me of RE4, then chapter 2 was incredible and full of unique touches that reminded me of experimental games like D2. A couple more really neat parts followed and it was on its way to being my favorite one yet--but then China. It didn't get terrible at that point, it just lost a lot of the surprise since I'd been there in two other campaigns and it was pretty samey and average from then on. I even found myself running past enemies to the next door toward the end because I was getting sick of fighting j'avo.
I like that they gave this campaign the Nemesis angle but Ustanak is not a worthy successor. His design looks like what would happen if you melted the five worst Spawn toys together. The helicopter fight was memorable though, it's kinda messed up considering this is the series that gave us the amazing Tyrant in the cargo bay battle of Code Veronica, but this was so ridiculous and over the top that I couldn't help but be entertained anyway. I liked the driving scenes too, there were a lot of guilty pleasure moments.
My favorite aspect of this campaign was the story, which is another surprise. With Wesker's son & Sherry all grown up there were so many ways they could've screwed it up, but I thought they did a great job and I ended up really liking both characters and they even got to me with that old Resident Evil unspoken romance. When it was over, it felt more like the ending to a Tekken game but I have to admit I had a good time and hope to see these characters return. 7/10

Completed Ada's campaign. It was soo good. Best story of RE6. I liked the stealth stuff and loved getting 1-shot kills with the crossbow. It also had the creepiest boss of the entire game. It was a perfect 6 hour 1 sitting playthrough. So, having beaten all 4 RE6 campaigns my opinion of it has changed drastically from those first hours with Leon; but it's still difficult to rate. It's a unique and ambitious entry in the series, and it mostly succeeds as a fast-paced action fest. Like the last AvP, the way the stories intertwine makes the sum much more interesting than its parts and here they take it one step further by allowing you to cross paths with other real people's campaigns online; that's innovative and awesome--though I avoided going online my first time through. I enjoyed the story progression and had a blast playing most of it (once I got the settings just right) but some of the finer points of the series have been lost. I think I agree with the masses that this as far as the series should take the action. I no longer agree that it's a bad game, but I'll be satisfied if this is remembered as that one entry in the series that was ridiculously over the top but still fun in its own way. It won't be, most people seem to hate it, but that's how I'll remember it. I hope the backlash doesn't cause them to take the series too far in the non-action direction, I just think the melee should be toned down and they should return to the long singleplayer campaign format. It was refreshing playing as Ada without a partner. The biggest strikes against it are the terrible frustrating QTE-filled Leon campaign that for me, failed in every way. What's the point of bringing slow zombies back if they can just dive on you from 15 feet away? And I could go on for paragraphs. The presentation, it took hours for me to get the settings right. The story and cutscenes were well put together and the online functions were inventive but having the worst settings optimization ever really hurt it. It was also just more rough around the edges than previous titles. Also, from what little I've played of Mercenaries mode so far, it seems like they messed it up; the way the enemies spawn in waves so you'll suddenly be facing 8 dogs is crappy. It was perfect in 4 & 5. Here's my score breakdown: Leon - 2/10 Chris - 9/10 Jake - 8/10 Ada - 9/10 Presentation - 4/10 Overall - 7/10 I want to replay the first game again. I've only beaten the director's cut on easy. I should probably revisit it myself one of these days and try to finally beat it on normal.

Good thread with a sweet picture at the top too. I'll be getting Revelations on PS3 when it comes out. I've heard good things. And I've got RE 1,2, and 3 downloaded on my PS3 but I'm too chicken to start them. It's been sooo long sice I've played them I'm sure I'll be too rusty. Same reason I haven't played CV in a long time. I'm intrigued about this supposed gold edition of RE6. I wouldn't mind some Claire DLC. I completed Chris' campaign in RE6. I think I did something wrong at the last boss because it took me like a half hour of doing the same thing until he died. So that sucked, but is a minor negative in the grand scheme of a campaign pretty much close to being worthy of following up RE5. I haven't tried playing it all the way through as Piers yet but it's nice to have a cool partner for once. His badass rifle doesn't hurt any though.

^Nice. I just have the first one DL'd on my PS3 so far. I restarted CV on PS2 a few months ago, I know what you mean about being intimidated by the older ones but I actually found it a bit easier since I halfway remembered what to do. No longer having the backward compatibility makes me really want get the HD versions of 4 & CV though.
I'll be geting Revelations right away too. I kept hearing about its Raid Mode so I looked it up and it sounds like a lot of fun. It seems like RE meets RPG dungeon crawling where enemies drop randomized loot. So you can find weapons with a Borderlands-style variety of stats and it's apparently very addictive trying to get better and better gear.
What'd you think of Ada's campaign? I loved how it made the whole story make way more sense.

Eh I thought it was okay. I liked that you can go at it alone but it just didn't jive with me. I've only done it once so I need to play it again to see if my opinion's changed any. I am glad it cleared up some things involving Carla though. That confused the hell out of me when I played Chris' campaign the first time.

I could see that, I liked the stealth sections but they were admittedly pretty half-hearted, and the chapter 1 escape was exciting but killed me repeatedly. And while I was glad to see real puzzles brought back for her section, the lack of clues sucked. I got stuck on the hangman one and the keycard one. That's a lot of complaints but I really did like it lol. I thought the helicopter stuff was sweet though, I was surprised it controlled so well and anything that makes Simmons less annoying is okay by me.

So where did you hear about these from? I would be shocked if the ORC sequel happened. Any Gold edition better end up on PS3 and 360. Sorry, the source got lost in my fancy formatting: tinyurl.com/re-rumorsDespite the critical reception, all reports indicate that ORC sold well and the online community is still very active on both platforms. And I dunno if it's true, but I read that it's more popular in Japan, so I'm cautiously optimistic that the rumor could be legit. Plus, if they want to get the main series back to its horror roots it could make sense to keep this side series going for the action fans. And I'm with ya on RE6, any gold edition content better come to the other platforms, at least as DLC.

I see the link now. doh! I would have no problem rebuying it for a Claire campaign. Especially if it rocked as much as Lost in Nightmares did. I've heard most of the DLC for RE6 except for Predator isn't very good this time around.

This ResidentEvil.net site is the best video game tie-in site I've seen. It actually succeds at making me want to play the game more and take part in the community events. The current challenge is for players worldwide to kill Helena's naked sister a shared total of 100,000 times within the next 4 days. And if the goal is met, everyone who contributed gets to download one of those awesome old-school low-poly skins for use in mercenaries. So cool, I wish ORC was integrated into the site like that.

Ditto. I killed her 3 times yesterday. I'll try to do it a couple of times a day until it ends. I'd really like to get the blocky Chris. And the Revelations section has this cool thing were you click 3 spots on this card thing that unlocks stuff for your diorama. It's given me some pretty sweet characters so far.

Seriously why don't you get a magnum in Chris' scenario? I've got one as Leon, Jake, and Sherry (I haven't played as Helena yet) but you can't find one at all (as far as I know) with Chris or Piers. WTF???

The bear commander & anti-material rifle are good enough for me but I guess you can never have too many magnums. Thoughts on all things RE:-The Pax Aeternia event was looking iffy there for a while but it looks like we'll make it to 100,000. Not sure why I'm that excited though, I don't really like the new Mercenaries mode. I guess I just find the idea of earning stuff as a community cool? -I've started using the Advanced SMG on ORC (basically a Kriss Vector) to switch things up from the safe and familiar Ravager and I'm lovin' it. It's less accurate but has greater capacity & rate of fire, so if you can overcome the challenge of keeping it fixed on someone's head you can get kills pretty quickly. Plus, it has really high blood frenzy so even if you get killed you'll often get your opponent with the swarm of zombies that follows. -The bosses on Darkside Chronicles are freakin' tough, I'm on the last section of the RE2 stuff and really want to get to RE4 & CV but I'm stuck for now. -Read on the RE.net forums that Capcom are reportedly unveiling 2 as of yet unnanounced RE projects at the end of the month (at PAX I think). If it's the 2 rumored releases from the first post I'll be super happy. Also I picked up the newly reprinted Umbrella Conspiracy novel that I've wanted to read for years. The obsession continues.

Wow raz, you really don't like QTEs? I love them! Those were some of my favorite parts in RE4 and I was very disappointed that they scaled them back in RE5. What's wrong with them anyway? Also, it's funny that you hated Leon's campaign so much. That was my favorite by far, It had a lot of night time scenes, a great variety of locales, and more interesting boss fights. I'm surprised that people hate fighting Simmons so many times, because I love that; it's very reminiscent of William from RE2. The Mercenaries mode is actually very fun, due to all the combat upgrades made to the game. It was hard for me to get used to at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's very challenging and very fun. I'm looking forward to getting the other online modes. We should play some RE6 online some time if you're down!

We can't play anything ever again, I cancelled my Xbox Live!
After 30 hours, I think I'm done with RE6 aside from co-op with GhostRider hopefully and probably more RE.net events. Now that the excitement has died down I'm kind of burnt out on it. I liked the 3 campaigns that I didn't hate in the moment and enjoyed the story progression, but I'm very ready for Revelations.

I want to replay the first game again. I remember playing the first game for the first time. I initially dismissed it for its weird voice acting, but I decided to try to get as far as I could, since someone got it for me for Christmas and I eneded up beating it and loving it. The Wesker is a bad guy twist actually surprised the shit out of me and the reveal when you're viewing those slides is awesome.

Revelations is the well-received 3DS game from last year(?) that's getting a $49.99 full-disc HD console release on May 21st. It follows Jill in a new story that takes place some time between RE3 & Lost In Nightmares. I think it plays like RE5 but you can move & shoot at the same time and it's said to have a stronger horror focus. It also features a new bonus mode called Raid Mode that's become very popular. It's supposed to mix RPG dungeon-crawling & loot with RE gameplay for a very addictive experience. Capcom says the reception of the console release will have a big influence on the direction they take the main series in moving forward.

Cool! To be honest I really only get super-excited for the core games of the franchise, but I do eventually get around to all the spinoffs. I just need to get a Wii to get the Umbrella Chronicles stuff (unless you're going to make me feel stupid right now by telling me they've been ported to 360 already).
By the way, did you ever sign that petition for a RE2 remake? I signed a petition floating around the internet a while back for an RE2 remake in the same vein as the REmake for Gamecube. Capcom said they'd give RE2 the same treatment if fans showed enough interest.

Well, the whole reason they're rushing to get Revelations on consoles is because critics and fans who've played it feel it's a truer sequel than RE6 and Capcom wants to show the masses they haven't lost their way. It seems to be designed like a full title, very much in the vein of RE4/5. They say the campaign's around 10 hours and Raid Mode could easily last you over 20. And filling in Jill's story between RE3 & 5 is core enough to me--I can't wait!! The Chronicles games were only ported to PS3 unfortunately, since 360 doesn't do lightgun games. There are too many unknowns regarding an RE2 remake for me to put the effort into signing a petition at the moment. It'd be great if done just like REmake, but are they even capable of that without Shinji Mikami? For now I'm content to explore the locales of RE2 in Darkside Chronicles and ORC.
