Decided that with all the trails around the city that I've never taken advantage of before, I'm gonna use them now that I'm in shape to do so. Got some comfy hiking boots and a walking stick made of light, but sturdy sotol wood. Wifespar got some cool hiking shoes and one of those trekking poles. We've researched the many options, and a simple but still challenging one in Romero Canyon is where we're gonna start. There are pools up there, but I doubt they'll have much but some standing water this time of year. Fucking bad time to start doing it, but going really early for a short one shouldn't be too bad. Getting out there around 5:30/6am tomorrow. I hope I don't get killed by a wildcat or stroke out. lol Got plenty of water and stuff to eat along the way. Researched the bejeesus out of it, so all that's left is to do it. Yeah, I've already done the Gandalf "You shall not pass!" with the stick.

Being a hiker isn't stating that you're going to be a hiker now. Being a hiker is going out and hiking, bitch!

Video cracked me up. It didn't quite go that way, though we did read a lot about what to take and not bother with. But I could see that happening. LOL

XD In all seriousness, though, I love hiking. I made it to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite and that was quite an adventure. Very cool once at the top, but the most tiring thing I've ever done. Started at 6 am, got back to ground level at 9 pm.

I remember you talking about that. Very cool. It was a lot of fun today. Tiring, and getting used to trusting my shoes and my footing and all was an interesting thing. Finally started the hike around 6:30 and got back to the car about 3 hours later. Didn't make it all the way to the upper pools this time. Not terribly disappointed though. There was a lot more challenging climbing than I'd figured. About the point that we stopped to gauge if we wanted to go any further, a group of kids, maybe 18 or 19 years old, were coming up behind us. Young and fit, only 1 of them seemed to have the fortitude to keep going. He was calling back to the rest of the group that stopped to rest about 50 feet below. One girl near us said, "I am so exhausted." which made my crusty ass feel pretty good. Only thing that was making us want to turn back was our knees, which we did. I knew that going down was going to be harder on the knees than up, and I am sooooo glad I got a good stick, because that thing was indispensable. I would've had a really hard time in several places. Wifespar had a couple of shaky spots and her knee buckled at one point, but she was okay and we finished strong. Stayed hydrated, ate what we needed to, started the day with oatmeal, and I feel pretty goddamn good right now. Already planning one for next weekend. I'll put up some pics later.

These little guys were everywhere. So fucking cool. They'd dart around in front of us, hit a rock, bob their heads and scoot away. Didn't see any javelinas, bobcats, coyotes, or even jackrabbits, but a few really pretty birds. This was the point around where we turned back. The little red circle is around a person on the trail that, from where I'm standing winds to the left, goes down then back up a little and cuts up along the front of that ridge and back around towards the pools. Just didn't think at that point my knees were ready for it. Besides, it'll be more rewarding getting to the pools in cooler weather and having water running there to cool off in. Until then, we'll do some of the other trails around town. I feel like I was unintentionally trying to be the bouncer to nature. I look like a dick.

Need to play that again. I need a Western fix dadburnit. It was cool, though. After that and getting an early lunch and stuff, came home and laid down for an hour. While I was drifting I dreamed I was just walking and "Riders on the Storm" was playing the whole time. Really vivid. Woke up feeling really good.

You seriously need to write a book on how to enjoy being alive. I would pay fourteen dollars or two action figures for it. Or maybe that's what this board is.

Very nice! No seeing coyotes after eating some crazy hot peppers?
There is one trail I'd love to do, its the Pacific Coast trail. Goes from the US-Mexico Border all the way up to the Can-Us border. Looks amazing!

Shit, I've read about the month-long hikes people take. I doubt I'd ever be in the condition, mindframe or even have the desire to do anything more than a day. Not that they don't sound cool, I just don't think it's my thing. But we do want to go camping now. So long at it's a secluded spot. I don't like the idea of setting up in a big group area and having to deal with the people.

I try to avoid other people at all costs while camping
I went camping last year, we were setting around the fire drinkin' beer and having a good time when the camp ground owner rolled up and said they were getting complaints that we were being to loud
this is a freakin' campground, not the suburbs

Made it about 3/4 mile or so further up the trail. It was pretty steep beyond where we stopped last time, and needed to do a lot of climbing. Just didn't think if we went to the pools my knees would make it back with me. That shit was getting seriously rough. It's a shame, because we had the first monsoon of the season. It rained like fucking crazy yesterday from about 5 until 10. It came down super heavy for about 20 minutes, with a lot of wind right off, then tapered off and kept a surprisingly steady drizzle the next several hour. That means those pools would be filled and excellent today. Really humid, though. It was a fair trade-off from the sun of last weekend, with cloud cover most of the morning, but the air was so heavy and there were little to no breezes, it was hard getting a solid lungful of air. It was so humid that I was drenched in sweat, head to toe. Another thing that made it harder was that all the rain had washed out the very nicely packed flatter areas of dirt in the higher areas, so there was a lot of bare rock with odd footing making it a totally different experience from the first time. But still we made better time and distance. Now I'm sitting here recuperating and waiting for a turd to mature so I can ditch it before we head to a fireworks show. Happy 4th, guys! America! Fuck yeah!

Where we turned around: Where we needed to get over before it went back down to the pools: Views: Spots that used to have packed earth were now just rocky spots. Very different footing: A birdie condo. There were 3 nests in this cholla:

Well there's a blast from the past. The unsavory types are not likely to bother with well-established state park hiking trails. All the people we've run across have been very friendly.

So, I'm curious. Why did Bonger create another iteration of himself just to make an ambiguously snarky remark and never come back to follow-up? We bought a yearly pass for the Arizona public parks, which gives access to most places. Considering we're going each week it was a major savings. Got a good 4 miles today, diverging to the Sutherland trail for a while and the doubling back. My ass is back and it's spectacular. Saw a cardinal fly past and sit on top of a saguaro today. It was pretty bitchin'.
