I thought I'd share this, from Kevin Smith's podcast where he's talking with Grant Morrison. This is reason #4,080 why I love comics. Holy mothershitting fuckballs. I've read that story several times, and I've NEVER thought of the ending that way. I always thought when Batman is leaning forward slightly with his hand on Joker's shoulder that it just meant they were both laughing at the joke, and that Batman was momentarily surrendering to the side of himself that really is crazy (because sane people don't dress up like a bat and fight criminals) and laughing at a joke. But I've also always been a little mystified by the last two panels, but the way Morrison looks at the ending those panels really do make sense in the context of the joke. I have to read The Killing Joke again tonight with that interpretation of the ending in mind. Mind=blown. Sounds entirely too reasonable. Probably is what happened. Good. Morrison sounds like he has a lollipop in his mouth sometimes.

I like Scottish accents. I like Morrison. I like that interpretation of the ending. I like lollipops.

I read it last night, and I'm not sure I agree with Morrison. It really doesn't look like Batman breaks Joker's neck on the final page. If anything Batman pushes him in front of the ambulance. That "EEEEEEEEEEE" sound effect is clearly the siren of the ambulance that you can see approaching, and that beam of light on the second to last panel is the headlights reflecting in the rain. The same motif is used on the first panels of page one to show the Batmobile's headlights.
Morrison has a point that Batman might be killing the Joker, and the beam of light disappearing on the last panel does connect to the joke Joker tells, but from the looks of the things Batman is shoving Joker in front of the ambulance.
