Wifespar mentioned the other day she couldn't really think of superheroes quickly enough for an answer after being asked a question. So I told her I'd have to think of a run or character she could read that would be good. I don't know if she's totally serious, but I saw my in and am gonna try it. LOL It's not going to be old stuff, no Golden or Silver age, no Spidey, Hulk or origin stuff from the days of yore, nothing like that. Something snappy she can fall right into that's just superheroes and super villains. Maybe Invincible, or Wolverine and the X-Men? Neither of those come with much baggage. Well, Invincible doesn't come with any, but fills up a lot of suitcases pretty quickly. LOL I think a person could get into W&TXM without needed the whole stinkin' soap opera of the X universe. Don't think she'd dig Infinity Gauntlet right off the bat either. I do think she'd like Locke & Key, but that doesn't fit the bill right now. But I'm just not sure, and I know you guys could offer up a bunch of stuff.

Invincible is a good one. It's usually my go-to book for instances like this. What tone are you thinking? Because there's a lot of good stuff I can think of that's pure super heroes with no baggage, all varying in tone. for example, Incognito by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips is a great noir/hardboiled style story of an ex villain trying to live a normal life, but gets sucked back into the "life" - only on the side of the angels, this time. It's really cool and you should read it, yourself, if you haven't. I'd say Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-men is even better than WATXM for that particular itch. Marvels, maybe? That seems like a cool way to get nob comic readers to view heroes the way we nerds do. Ultimate Spider-man is great, too. In fact almost everything Ultimate, but I think Spidey is the best of that bunch. Hardly any rotating artists and one writer the whole time.

Nothing too edgy or dark. The question was, what superhero would she want next to her in a zombie apocalypse. Kind of along the lines of SZJ's post about choosing one to protect against the rest. But she came up flat. So, basically memorable characters, the larger-than-life types, might be a start.
Incognito sounds interesting, but more for me. Marvels is a good idea.

Ooooh! Recommendations for people trying out comics for the first time! I'm really good at this!
Try these:
All-Star Superman (pretty much the perfect superhero story, and the whole series is only 12 issues) Planetary (this one isn't really superheroes per se, but it sort of is. It's just really, really good. It's more of a sci-fi story where the main characters have sorta-kinda superpowers. And they do run into Batman and Superman.) Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men (best X-Men story I've ever read, and really easy to jump right into without ever having read X-Men before. If you've seen the movies you're good to go, except that Jean Grey is dead)
Any of those would be a good place to start. If frin's wife doesn't want edgy or dark, stay away from Frank Miller and Garth Ennis, and most Alan Moore.
Have fun, ladyfrin!

I can't use the edit function on my phone for some reason, so nob was meant to be non in my earlier post, not noob, which would be a logical guess.

Was going to recommend Sandman or Hellblazer but she's looking to avoid the darker tones...Green Lantern Rebirth could be a good one to go with, anything Green Lantern by Geoff Johns has its darker tones but lots of humor to it.

Yeah, The GL stuff could be decent. I'm leaning towards Whedon's Astonishing run.

So, aren't you going to ask US which superhero we'd like to have at our sides in a zombie apocalypse? What makes wifespar so special?

I didn't even ask her. But, she loves me up and stuff, that's what makes her special.
Who would you want? You can only choose 1.

Superman....he's the most powerful. Wouldn't he be the most logical choice?

Not really. Who can help provide the most help in the way of survival. Sure Supes has power, but he's not much on originality and cunning. He'd be boring as shit to be around too.

In that case it seems like Wolverine is the obvious choice.

See, I was trying to remember if he was immune to the virus in Marvel Zombie. I thought I remembered him being turned.

I thought Wolvie was one of the ones who ate Silver Surfer and got the Power Cosmic and went on a rampage across the universe?

LOL, that's right. Actually the most obvious choice isn't found in either of the big two. The Goon! Though, he's not really a super hero, come yo think of it. Hellboy?

That's what I said, twats. He got turned by zombies and ate the universe. The power they got from SS and Galactus was implied by the eating the universe part.

I know I'm late to the party... been a little busy flying here, there and everywhere... I tend to like darker stories, so I'm not great at recommending things that aren't dark. However, I enjoyed Fables which is lighter in tone... Sandman (dark, but not too dark)... Soulfire or Fathom... I love Locke & Key, but that's definitely on the dark side. Solominicknight had me reading Guardians of the Galaxy before I came home- that could be good as well. Just trying to give a "girlie" perspective... although, like I said, I like darker stories. You should let her read the Wonderland series... that'd definitely get her into comics, it's not dark at allllll

Guardians was fun, but I don't think it'd be a good place to hop on. Same with a lot of the good recs on here. Seriously, the last comic she read was Richie Rich.
