Just finished the 2nd trade of Uncanny X-Force, "Deathlok Nation", and it's alright but I'm not blown away. I really loved X-Force Vol. 2 with Clayton Craine's artwork, even though the plots could be a bit stupid and the dialogue was eye-rolling at times; it was just fresh, blood-soaked, and badass without straying too far from the classic X-Men universe. When I saw the slick new style they were going with when they added Uncanny to the title, I thought they saw the potential of the book and were giving it more love. And I guess they did, but it's lost most of what I liked about it. The writing is technically much better, almost immitation Warren Ellis stuff, but the stories don't have as much of an X-feel, it's more Star Trekky. And I was excited to see how Deadpool would work on the team, but the disappointing answer is that it's by being toned down to 10% of usual level of crazy.
It's objectively good stuff, I just had a lot more fun when Warpath, X-23, and Wolfsbane were stabbin' fools alongside Wolverine; rather than Wolverine having a bromance with the mostly unintelligible Fantomex who's busy saving microcosms that he keeps in his pocket from superheroes turned borg. But, I have the next, I think 4 trades, so we'll see how it goes.

I agree about Uncanny X-force. But I have to say, I can't stand Clayton Crain's art. Individual pieces look cool, but in a sequential story, it's way too murky, flat, dark, and artificial for me.

I hear that a lot, same for Olivetti. I dunno, I like digital stuff cuz I wish I could do it and make my stuff look finalized. Seems like everyone else is trying to be Frank Quitely and shit and that's great but it kinda bores me.

I was just having a conversation with my coworker/friend today about digital artists. I don't mind digital art, but sometimes artists lean on it too much. A couple that I love are Saga's Fiona Staples (AMAZING!) and Roy Allan Martinez. And I really don't mean to be harsh, but I happen to also hate Ariel Olivetti. I picked up Punisher War Zone during Civil War and I couldn't stand how bland the art was. Fiona Staples Roy Allan Martinez

Looks kinda like Travis Charest but simple. It's fine, I'm just not head over heels for it.
Anyone read Cable and X-Force? I need to get those trades.

I just read "Quiver", the Kevin Smith Green Arrow reboot. Really liked it. Smith did a wonderful job rebirthing a dead character, and his respectful but humorous handling of so many of the silly comic conventions we all know was quite entertaining. I've like GA for a long time but never read this story, and it makes me like him that much more now.

I always heard that one was really good. I'll have to check it out now that the show has shown me how awesome the character is.

He addresses things like the boxing glove arrow, the endless string of Golden Age child sidekicks and most other items that are so corny to look back at in such a way that they are justifiable along the path to where comics are now.
And aside from that stuff which isn't really important to it, the story and characters are all presented very well and it was a fun read.

I love when writers use the old-school cheesy elements in modern serious stories, adds an interesting depth and fun to it.

At one point GA is talking to a young girl who wants him to train her. He's talking about the child sidekicks and how the heroes should have all been arrested for child endangerment at the time. He was trying to show her how things had changed. At the same time he was shifting himself, after coming back from the dead with some amnesia, to get in the mindset of "now" where a bad guy is going to shoot him in the head and murder him as quickly as he can, rather than tie him and Batman to the keys of a giant typewriter and give them every chance in the world of escaping before their keys were punched. And it all made sense with the story being told by Smith, but he wasn't mocking it.

That's good stuff. Grant Morisson does a lot of that too, and it really takes it to the HNL.

Fiona Staples art is pretty. Not MINDBLOWINGLYFUCKINGAWESOME like some people make it out to be. You're not wrong. Her art is definitely simple and uncomplicated and not flashy. I really love her anatomy, though. Her anatomy and composition are really great. And facial expressions. But yeah, sometimes the colors and backgrounds can be a little flat. Although, it's not from a lack of effort. It's due to her having all the art responsibilities and meeting those monthly deadlines. Pretty impressive.

Very cool, CP. It's my number one favorite comic as well. Right up there with Watchmen and V for Vendetta. Hey CP, you should check out Scalped, too. That one's on the level, too. Scalped eh? I will look into it! I do want to check out "Chewed" too. The story sounds so bonkers.

The concept of eating things to see them is unique. And then eating people to see their murder is just....what the fuck haha.

Scalped is really good, but 100 Bullets is a bajillion times better. And they're both crime drama so the comparison is apt.
And Chew is fun even though I never made it past the first tpb.
