I think what Plastic Man did was unforgivable and he should be encased in a Silly Putty egg and sent to the Phantom Zone. Sorry, not reading it. Just didn't want to leave you hanging.

I read about it. It sounds like DC is keeping their gross "women in refrigerators" (google it) tradition alive and well.
I really love a lot of their characters, but DC's actual comics are getting to be pretty much unreadable.

I'm not invested, haven't been reading, and don't want to start an ugly debate. But from reading that refrigerator thing and the shocking cliffhanger, that seems like an unfair connection to make. It seems like lately there have been weekly articles about how everything in video games and comics needs to be less sexist and there's probably some truth to it since these things have historically been directed more toward guys, but at a point it seems unnecessary and stupid. Just about every superhero has died at least once. These characters are crime fighters, injury and possible death comes with the territory regardless of gender. Bones has been shot on the show Bones and no one claimed that was unfair to women. I guess I'm just confused by what the people writing these articles ultimately want.
But I know that wasn't supertim's point. I get not liking when a favorite character is killed off and totally sympathise. I still haven't finished last season of Sons Of Anarchy due to that.
And we still need spoiler tags like a mofo.

Its like making the Earth 2 GL gay...seems like it was only done to sell more issues of a new series. Feel that same about JLA #4 and what happened there. I am about to google the refrigerator thing that was just mentioned and see what that's about.

I guess it's easier to do this, than to actually write good stories. I was really hoping New 52 would get me back into DC.

The only New 52 title that I have not missed an issue is Justice League. Even though I am a huge Superman fan I have only read one issue of that character, and none of Action Comics. The AC idea that he is a bumpkin farmer with a cape does not interest me, though having said that the stories are probably awesome. New 52 feels like DC is really pushing characters that people don't favor, Aquaman and Shazam, in particular. And then elminiating Robin, Catwoman. Hasn't Batman been through enough these past 3 months?!

I found the "Women in Refrigerators" page last night that okcomputer mentioned. Until now I never realized how truly tough it is to be a female character in comic books. Having your kids end up as figments of your imagination, readers only really care about your boobs, or that your powers render you infertile. Wow.

I'm sure there are plenty of examples of women treated overly bad in DC history but would you agree that getting shot in the head is just a risk that all heroes face? I just don't think it makes sense to arbitrarily label it "refrigerators" every time something bad happens to a female comic character. Isn't it more sexist to suggest they should be unharmable?
And these things happen to male characters too. The really bad Deathblow reboot had his family end up being CIA plants who he was forced to murder and no one batted an eye. Comic characters face atrocities all the time, that's their thing. If you gather every effed up thing that's happened to them in the past 50 plus years it's going to seem reprehensible, but that's viewing it out of context and dismissing all of the positive moments.
I think the author of the refrigerator story's response makes a lot of sense. It was less about male/female and more about main/supporting character. It may have been sexist that the main characters were mostly male back then, but having bad things happen to supporting characters is just part of compelling storytelling. The same thing essentially happened on Dexter and it was one of the most impactful moments of the series. It's not about celebrating harm to women but feeling for the main character's loss.
I want women to be portrayed fairly, I just think the point gets lost when literally every instance of violence against female characters is labelled inappropriate, especially when they're violent characters themselves.

An even better illustration of the silly way some comic creators treat female characters is The Hawkeye Initiative. It shows how overly sexualized female characters are sometimes by copying artwork and replacing the female character with Hawkeye. It's also hilarious.

I've heard people saying he might turn out to be Earth 2 Joker.
I kinda hope it's not, and that he's just a bit Joker-ish...
