DC's characters are more mythic though, which lends them more easily to different interpretations. Not to get too academic with this stuff, but Batman and Superman really are modern American folklore without one single "real" version to hold up as the standard. There have been probably hundreds of different takes on those characters, some good and some really bad, but that just reinforces how strong they are as sheer iconography. And even the best Marvel characters just don't have that. Sure, everybody knows about Spider-Man, but because he's such a relatable character he seems much more grounded in his fictional reality. If someone were to write a story with Spidey in Victorian London going up against Jack the Ripper it would be ridiculous, but with Batman it just works. I guess what I'm getting at is that DC's characters work best as symbols to reinterpret in different ways while Marvel's characters work better as believable people (who can shoot laser beams from their eyes). Really great post!

They could have all 3 or 4 characters together in the story.
On one hand we see Matt Murdock in a Victorian Court of Law interrogating witnesses to what they think they saw as a “flaming head magical creature on horse.” Little did people know that Victorian Lawyer Murdock is at night the masked vigilante known as the Daredevil, who is after the Reaper himself for the many murders on the streets. But people reportedly having witnessed a “horseman with a flaming head” (Ghostrider) in several accounts complicate the picture for Lawyer Murdock. Story goes on…
Sherlock Holmes can be completely reinvented in the story. He is the Punisher (my God!). The Punisher is hell bent on going after the Reaper for having murdered his entire family. The Victorian Punisher is expert in all forms of Victorian weaponry.
Then comes the mystery of the Reaper in the story. He/she could be another Marvel character (a Marvel villain that fits the role well of course).

Most of the A-list Marvel characters are a ripoff of a DC property, ironically including the names "Captain Marvel" and "Doctor Doom." Granted, Marvel has made a better go of some of the ideas. But I am continually amazed at how many people don't realize how many ideas Marvel has plagiarized from DC. Although none of these characters are clones of each other, there is too much similarity for a reasonable person to accept that Marvel didn't steal the concept. Marvel is not the "House of Ideas" it has been nicknamed. And to those of you who can find a few DC ripoffs, good luck since most major DC characters were invented before 1960, that is to say BEFORE most of the Marvel Universe heroes even existed. Aquaman=Sub-Mariner is probably the biggest one. But anything DC has done to rip Marvel off pales in significance to what Marvel has done.
Listed below are some of the most high-profile rip-offs, but are by no means all...or even MOST. ____________________________________________________________________________________
X-Men=Doom Patrol (both a team of wacky, outcast heroes led by a telepath in a wheel chair)
Hulk=Solomon Grundy (different origin, same character)
Spider-Man=Tarantula (Tarantula was even called a "spider-man" sometimes)
Mockingbird=Black Canary (my god, they even look like each other)
Quicksilver=Flash (obvious one)
Hawkeye=Green Arrow (nuff said)
Iron Man=Atomic Knight (Vietnam vs. post-apocolypse)
Bucky=Robin (Robin by over a year)
Fantastic Four=Challengers of the Unknown (Challengers had no powers)
Thanos= Darkseid (Lady Death vs. Anti-life equation...and they even LOOK alike)
Vision=Red Tornado (tho Vision wins in a fight)
Doctor Doom=Doctor Doom (yes, DC invented a world-conqueror named Doctor Doom first)
Avengers=Justice League (Avengers debuts three years after JL in what Stan Lee calls a "response to the success of the JLA")
Captain Marvel=Captain Marvel (both tough flying guys, but the similarity ends there... though stealing the name is huge.)
Doctor Strange=Doctor Fate (though Strange is much funkier)
Mister Fantastic=Plastic Man OR Elongated Man (both DC stretchy-guys were out before Mister Fantastic, Plastic Man first)
Swamp Thing=Man-Thing (they even look almost exactly alike)
Quasar=Green Lantern (wristbands instead of a ring)
Wolverine=Timber Wolf (yeah...even Wolverine is a DC ripoff. Though Marvel has done a LOT more with this concept.) _________________________________________________________________________
And there's MUCH, MUCH more if you want to research it. Suffice it to say that about 75% of the most popular properties in the Marvel Universe are rip-offs of a DC concept. Should they sue? Nah, they don't really have legal case and it's a copycat industry. But for you DC haters, understand this:
Most of what is good in comics started somehow or another with DC. It's OK to hate them, but understand that they invented nearly everything that is popular in comics.

You can't really call Buck a ripoff of Robin. Both characters are the classic "wish-fulfillment sidekick" character meant to represent the target audience (young kids, mostly boys) taking part in the story alongside the main hero. There were lots of those even before Robin.
And so many of the superheroes created in the 30s and 40s were based off of established archetypes that not even Superman was a completely original concept at the time.

Technically, Marvel's Captain Marvel predates DC's Captain Marvel, because DC didn't have the rights to him until after Marvel already established theirs.

What about him? Visually he's referencing The Prowler, but Marvel copied Spawn with Nightwatch.

Nightmare rips off The Sandman's Morpheus /Dream Scarecrow rips off... I'll let you guess.

I've always liked Prowler and Nightwatch. Visually, they're fantastic creations.
Started in on the Thunderbolts from the 90s. Don't even want to start diagramming their alter-egos' counterparts, much less their alter-alter-egos'. LOL

I think Skelly meant Todd created Nightwatch. I read that too, couldn't find confirmation but it seems likely.

Pretty sure he didn't create Nightwatch either. Marvel, if anything, based his look on Spawn, because he was created after Torg McFozlove left.
Yup, two udder guyz created him.

Here's the page I found that states the rumor that Todd created Nightwatch before leaving Marvel, and I can totally envision a scenario where Marvel dug through Todd's desk after he left, found Nightwatch sketches and thought sweet we own our own crappier Spawn! But again, that guy couldn't find any info to confirm it, so it's anyone's guess. Also, the guy who wrote this has lame opinions. universaldork.com/2012/12/16/nightwatch-marvels-biggest-unsuccessful-rip-off-or-is-he/
