The laughing was all in Joker's head right? I always hoped in the back of my mind that in reality, Batman was kicking his teeth in

That's what I always thought. It would be a hell of a feat to get freaking BATMAN to laugh, but no way is he gonna do it right after you shot a young woman to say nothing of said woman being BATGIRL!!!!
But then again, I'm intrigued by the notion of Batman being a little crazy. That should be explored more in comics I think. But regarding Killing Joke anyway, the laughing HAS to be in Joker's head

I'm pretty sure it actually happened. i think that's what Alan Moore wanted. plus Batman has to be a bit unstable to run around like a bat and have a "bat-this" and "bat-that". a normal person would need to give everything a bat moniker, but Wayne NEEDS the bat, He NEEDS the bat names for his stuff. without the Bat Wayne would probably be in Arkham. its all pretty ironic, really

That one scene, with Batman and Joker laughing together at a joke, puts a whole new spin on every Batman story before and since that story. He's a little bit crazy too.
Alan Moore used to be such an insane genius before his brain broke sometime in the 90s.

Well even if Batman is crazy, you have to agree that he's 'STABLE crazy'. I mean, he is a genius, and he's perfectly able to lead 2 lives without skipping a beat, and he's accomplished so much

Hmmm.... you know, isn't 'insane' defined as someone who does the same thing over and over, yet expects a different outcome? Sort of like Batman going out in the street every night to kick some ass, yet Gotham never really gets any better... Maybe Ol' Bats is crazier than I ever considered before!

I think it was an episode of "Batman Beyond", definitely one of the animated shows, where someone tries to convince Bruce that he's crazy by sending thoughts into his head telepathically. He figures out what's going on because "the voice kept calling me Bruce. When I talk to myself, that's not what I call myself".
Awesome, but also more evidence that he's batshit crazy.

I think on one hand it shows that Bruce is a little nutty and goes with Joker's idea that we are all just one bad day away from snapping.
But on the other hand the issue sort of showed a more compassionate Batman. How he at least makes an attempt to talk with the Joker before he bashes his face in. And I think the ending shows just a bit of that as well. Here, let's have a laugh before i put you back in Arkham, and we'll see you the same time next week.
A bigger question, especially knowing Alan Moore: do you suppose the Joker sexually assaulted/molested Barbara as she lay there dying? It wasn't really implied but had Alan moore written this book in the last 10 years I'm sure it would have been the case.

I thoguht about that too, but I highly doubt it. The Joker maybe be sick, but i don't think he'd do that.

The laughter from Batman seems to be a bit of a divisive issue in this thread but I always thought it was just another sign of Batman's compassion and his last attempt to connect with the Joker at any level before becoming resigned to the fact that they'd be doing this forever. It almost seemed like Batman thought he could get the Joker to relax and maybe let his guard down by laughing at his joke so they could get into the issues surrounding their feud before the police arrived. It was kind of the logical thing to do after the Joker initially rebuffed his offer to help him after Batman cut straight through all the shit to try to get to the heart of the matter. Also, Moore pretty much slaps you in the face with the shit about Batman being crazy just like his villains so I'm surprised that some people think that aspect is actually up for interpretation.
