Seems Sandusky was a known diddler for a long time, and was even coddled and protected in order to maintain whatever manner of utterly retarded sense of school pride people felt was more important. Absolutely everyone that either turns a blind eye or in any way helps to perpetuate such abuse should have their genitals hammered into paste, their eyes chewed out by rats and their hands slow-fed into a garbage disposal. That's how I feel about it. Where do you draw the line at maintaining the status quo, school pride and programs worth many millions of dollars? Where do you stop short in protecting something that ultimately means nothing at all? www.nesn.com/2011/11/jerry-sandusky-rumored-to-have-been-pimping-out-young-boys-to-rich-donors-says-mark-madden.html

Fucking loser. I heard rumors that Duke may do away with the football program and apparently there is talk running about of a sex trade having gone on.

With the money schools spend on football in general (equipment, staffing, field & equpment maintenance, transportation and all that, right up to scholarships just to have players attend their school...) ... weigh it against the rare person that can make a career of it, and it'd just make sense to scrap the sports programs altogether. Spend the money on computers or updated books, or more teachers. Afterall.... more jobs involve using a computer than involve running across a field with a ball. I'm not even going to touch the topic of the whole "better than everyone else" culture involved. (Just my $0.02 on it. )

I asked because I'm sure there are plenty of boosters and alumni from many schools that would probably be willing to overlook such crimes in order to keep the colors flying.
I did see that Ashton Kutcher got all kinds of bitchy on Twitter about Paterno getting shitcanned, then had someone explain what was actually going on and he backed off. He seemed to think it was just because the guy was old and sucked at his job. Talk about ignorant.
I think most people will be repulsed by such a thing, and would not support such actions no matter how devastating the consequences. But I guarantee you there are also many who will be happy just to see a W each week, damn the details. Just curious to see if anyone who might feel that way would admit to it. Not very likely, which should hopefully make them think twice. But we can all find ways to justify certain things, no matter how horrible in some cases, to protect something we love.

The problem with hiding most scandalous activities is that they have a way of coming out.
The school is probably going to lose tons of funding now, not to mention its morally ABHORRENT what went on here.
I hope these people burn in hell.

With the money schools spend on football in general ... weigh it against the rare person that can make a career of it, and it'd just make sense to scrap the sports programs altogether. The problem there is that athletic programs do not exist as a means of professional development. They exist as recreational activities, albeit ones that can yield extreme revenue sources (over $55 million annually in PSU's case). Very few student athletes enter these programs expecting to go pro. There are many student atheltes who love to play soccer, basketball, volleyball, football, baseball, etc. Why should they not have these opportunities? May as well scrap the chess club too then. Also, considering the amount of money that goes into these programs as you have mentoned, were the school not making a 'profit' these programs would not exist. I quote 'profit' beause much of the money earned is used to fund athletic programs that do not make money, like swimming, lacrosse, soccer, etc. As for where to draw the line, I would suggest any and all activity that can be deemed illegal in the eyes of the State. As Mttman stated, these things will come out so keep your nose clean. It's also worth realizing that the atrocity that occured at PSU is much bigger than football. Wait til we see how high up the chain this is gonna go.

Damn I was super tired yesterday, I meant Penn State not Duke. Anyway, I like how this is getting massive amounts of news coverage (which it should) but when this happens with anything church related that is in the news and then vanishes rather quickly.

Yeah there's a line, it's way the fuck back there where you started looking at little boys. I'm thinking miniaturize a stump grinder and then use your imagination. No excuse for hurting kids, period. And every single person who knew without exception should be tortured to death in a way I have yet to devise.

Paterno's name has been removed from the Big Ten championship trophy. I think the repercussions are going to shake that place to the core for a long time, and it's possible it might cause a few other long-lived institutions to take a look in their closets and begin cleaning them out on their own.

Good article frinspar. But I can't agree with the author's point to a certain extent. Many football programs have hidden NCAA violations. But what went on at PSU goes way beyond illegal benefits and unethical recruiting.

Yeah, they aren't comparable at all, and the way he segued from Penn to the NCAA violations suggests he sees them along the same lines. I don't suspect that's really how he feels, and it could have been written better, but his point wasn't too muddled because of it.

Fuck Penn State. I hope it burns to the ground. Everyone that should've done something and didn't, knew about this monster and just wanted to win and keep the money machine rolling along.

I'd expand that sentiment beyond that school to another, larger institution, but this is the sports forum.

I guess after that tiny-toothed, mopey-faced rapist found out his own adopted kid was gonna testify against him if he took the stand, Jerry caved and gave up the idea that testifying on his own behalf was not smart at all, but a fucking stupid thing, and let the jury start deliberating how many times he'd be shanked in the yard for the rest of his miserable life for diddling kids.
Penn State is gonna go broke and close in the soon-to-follow civil cases because of their complicity in shielding this sick cunt. Good.

For the record, I'm hoping that Jerry Sandusky, rapist and pervert that he is, won't last in prison more than a month. I'd sign my name to the teardrop tattoo that his death earns.

I have a feeling that when he goes to prison, he will see very limited, if any, time in genpop.
And that's a crying shame.

Y'know, the idea of "prison justice" both bothers and buoys me, depending. In this case, I would find a severely painful and torturous jury of his peers in orange jumpsuits to be a very welcome thing.

It's not even close to giving back what those kids lost at the hands of this monster. But it's a small start.
It's a shame so many positive things are now tarnished forever because of Sandusky and those who allowed him to continue doing what he did.

True. At his age, pretty much any sentence following a case of this magnitude is life in prison or a "death sentence" if you want to get technical...I'm just curious if they'll make the show of giving him the 452 years he has coming.
Just a shame we can't keep him alive long enough to make sure he serves all of 'em.

From a friend's facebook post:
"Karma can be so fitting..... From MSNBC on Sanduskys first night in jail
As for what he may be facing once he’s actually behind bars? If his first night in jail is any indication…
As soon as the lights went out at night, Sandusky’s fellow inmates at the Centre County Correctional Facility serenaded him with a chorus from Pink Floyd’s 'The Wall':
'Hey, teacher, leave those kids alone!'"

Yeah, I'm not sure why this is such big news today. It was clear early on this was a concerted effort to cover for him for a long time.
If there is a hell, Paterno is getting a billion hot pokers in his pucker every hour, and Sandusky and the rest of those complicit in covering for him will end up next to him eventually.
The legacy of Paterno and that school should never be looked at with pride again.

Penn State got kneecapped by NCAA. Good. $60 million in fines, scholarships cut, no bowl games for 4 years, and Paterno's record wiped from the books from 1998 to the time of his retirement. I saw his statue was taken down, too.
This should be a wake up call to any other schools that run on football as their #1 interest and turn a blind eye to anything else as long as it doesn't hurt the football program. I said should, but probably won't. I imagine there are a lot of university officials and staff scrambling to meetings all over the country right now looking at how they can cover their asses.
