One of my favorite weekend evening activities lately has been to get good and stoned and put in a movie I haven’t seen in a while, and see what kind of new appreciation my nice n’ toasty brain can get from it.
So last evening I had a nice edible, waited for it to really kick in, and then I popped in Attack of the Clones. My least favorite Star Wars movie.... and I made it about 6 minutes. It’s just a bad, bad movie. Those opening scenes are unbelievably clunky, with painfully stilted dialogue and green-screen CGI sets that have not aged well at all over the past 19 years and are now painful to look at in the era of HD.
So yeah, after about 6 minutes and Anakin and Obi-Wan are about to see Padme’s... I couldn’t do it. It would take an irresponsible amount of weed to make that movie watchable and I’m not 22 anymore.
I wound up watching Alita: Battle Angel again instead. That movie fucking rules.

The only reason I sat through that fucking movie in the theater was because I kept hoping it would get better. It didn't.

I went with my mom. She sure loved Jar Jar. OKC, tried the same thing after getting Disney+. Was all worked up to start the series and got about as far as you did. Fuck that movie with and without weed. But wifespar has mentioned a desire to watch them all. So probably will have to endure it again soon.

It's weird because AOTC has plenty of stuff in it I really like. The action scenes are great (especially the asteroid chase with those awesome sonic-bomb things), the sideplot about Detective Kenobi tracking down a missing planet, Count Dooku is a genuinely cool character that Lucas just couldn't figure out what to do with... But my favorite thing in that movie is the choice to make all the Separatists non-humans. By making them the scapegoats of the war that eventually leads to the Empire, Palpatine makes sure his Empire is firmly rooted in human-supremacy and racism. Classic fascist behavior, and a clever decision on Lucas's part. Really all of Palpatine's machinations across all 3 prequels is a genuinely great story arc, but it gets bogged down (especially in Attack of the Clones) by bad pacing, bad performances, bad dialogue, bad direction...
I think trying to watch it stoned was a mistake. When I watch a movie stoned I usually pick up on stuff I never noticed before, but in those 7 minutes of Attack of the Clones what I picked up on more than anything was that it's just not a good movie. And the good bits that are there tend to lost in the haze because Lucas didn't have any producers or editors to rein him in, he just had Yes-Men.

I've always known it's a bad movie, don't get me wrong. I've just always focused on the parts of it I really like whenever I actually sit down to watch it (or the other prequels). It's more fun to like stuff than to not like stuff.

I thought we were shitting on Phantom. Whoops. Spaced on that important part. I'm good (enough) with the other two as far as watching now.
