So I'm only about ten pages into this book im working on and its driving me nuts trying to get a good character name.
The character is a Vietnam vet that died 10 years ago. his DNA was used in an experiment to make a special force of cloned soldiers that had unique training and mission experience. it gets pretty fucking far fetched so ill spare the details.
any way i want the name to resemble something like a cowboy or mountain man with roots going to back to middle ages or even the days of Classical antiquity.
I've got a couple so far. let me know if you like them and think they are catchy.
Elroy Benjamin Yates, or Gabriel Shan Yates.
Anyone that helps out receive a picture of ctylers pecker.

It's best to not try to make characters have "unique" names. They usually come off as hokey. Less is more in this case. If you're really stumped just take two people you respect or admire and mash them together.

By mashing them up I meant mix and match given and surnames.

I really love how jim butchers main character has such a common and unromantic type name. "Harry Dresden" i love it.

Like Darry Dresden, or Darryl. Or Darius, that's a cool name.

Third method I use is phone book it. Blind point and mix and match names that way.
If it's an important character I'll have a name that actually has some meaning or symbolism, and usually those names come to me without having to think about them.
Otherwise, I mix and match, and you can come up with some interesting combinations without the name sounding "forced."

I have a hard time naming my characters. I always want them to have some sort of meaning behind them, however minor. I read an article by one of my favorite writers - forget who - that mentioned how he names his characters. He said that he just uses names he hears from life that he thinks are cool. Whenever he hears an interesting name, he saves it in his memory until he needs to name a character who he's having trouble naming.

Jack Gamble is an awesome name. I can't believe that's real!
Btw, going with your theme, how about:
Jeremiah Jackson, Christopher James, or Lucas Walker?

I was trollin' before but when I really come up with names I like to get the vowel sounds in my head until I get something with a nice ring to it, then fill in the letters.

Too obvious. I'd switch em up slightly like Ezekiel Hawksmoor or well Jeremiah's just gotta go.
